Improved thermoelectric performance of α- and β- Cu 2 Se through suppression of hole density using extrinsic copper vacancies

Modulating Cu + ion disorder in Cu 2 Se can enable control over the polymorphism and the carrier density leading to enhanced thermoelectric properties for both α- and β-Cu 2 Se. Here we report that the incorporation of Cr 3+ into the Cu 2 Se crystal lattice facilitates the stabilization of α-Cu 2 Se at 300 K leading to a large (~140%) reduction in the carrier density both below and above the phase transition. This is attributed to the reduction in the density of intrinsic copper interstitials (Cu$^{•}_{i}$) within the Cu (2-δ-λ) (Cr$^{··}_{Cu}$)λ(V$^{'}_{Cu}$)δ(Cu$^{π}_{i}$) δ-2λ (h • ) δ-2λ Se crystal lattice. Such optimization of the carrier density led to a large (63%) increase in the thermopower and a drastic (46%) reduction in the total thermal conductivity for both α- and β-Cu 2 Se matrices. Consequently, a significant enhancement of the thermoelectric performance is observed in the entire temperature range from 300 K to 773 K. This results in high average ZT values for both α-Cu 2 Se (ZT ave = 0.60) and β-Cu 2 Se (ZT ave = 0.97), which paves the way for both near room temperature and high temperatures applications. Furthermore, this work provides a new approach to optimize the thermoelectric performance of Cu 2 Se-based materials by leveraging the interaction between mobile intrinsic Cu$^{·}_{i}$ and extrinsic V$^{'}_{Cu}$ to suppress the hole density.

Tunable Growth of Layered Double Hydroxide Nanosheets through Hydrothermal Conversion of Atomic Layer Deposition Seed Layers

To enable the design and manufacturing of hierarchical nanomaterial architectures, there is a need for synthesis and processing methods that can enable tunable geometric control at the nanoscale while maintaining conformality on complex 3-D templates. Here, in this study, we explore the programmable control of vertically oriented Zn-Al layered double hydroxide (LDH) nanosheet arrays using atomic layer deposition (ALD) to deposit a seed layer of Al 2 O 3 , which is subsequently consumed and converted into the LDH phase under hydrothermal growth conditions. We demonstrate tunable control over the spacing and length of the nanosheets by varying the thickness of the initial ALD seed layer with subnanometer precision. This can be viewed as a nanoscale titration reaction, where Al acts as the limiting reagent during the hydrothermal synthesis of the nanosheets. Elemental mapping demonstrates the dynamic evolution of the resulting morphology, which is driven by surface diffusion and nucleation processes. The conformal nature of ALD allows for hierarchical growth of nanosheets on the surface of a variety of nonplanar substrate geometries, including microposts, paper fibers, and porous ceramic supports. This illustrates the power of ALD to enable bottom-up growth of 3-D nanoarchitectures with tunable geometries by controlling nucleation and growth in subsequent solution reactions.

Direct methane activation by atomically thin platinum nanolayers on two-dimensional metal carbides

We report efficient and direct conversion of methane to value-added products has been a long-term challenge in shale gas applications. Here, we show that atomically thin nanolayers of Pt with a single or double atomic layer thickness, supported on a two-dimensional molybdenum titanium carbide (MXene), catalyse non-oxidative coupling of methane to ethane/ethylene (C 2 ). Kinetic and theoretical studies, combined with in-situ spectroscopic and microscopic characterizations, demonstrate that Pt nanolayers anchored at the hexagonal close-packed sites of the MXene support can activate the first C–H bond of methane to form methyl radicals that favour desorption over further dehydrogenation and thus suppress coke deposition. At 750 °C and 7% methane conversion, the catalyst runs for 72 hours of continuous operation without deactivation and exhibits >98% selectivity towards C 2 products, with a turnover frequency of 0.2–0.6 s -1 . Our findings provide insights into the design of highly active and stable catalysts for methane activation and create a platform for developing atomically thin supported metal catalysts.

Atomically dispersed Pb ionic sites in PbCdSe quantum dot gels enhance room-temperature NO2 sensing

Abstract Atmospheric NO 2 is of great concern due to its adverse effects on human health and the environment, motivating research on NO 2 detection and remediation. Existing low-cost room-temperature NO 2 sensors often suffer from low sensitivity at the ppb level or long recovery times, reflecting the trade-off between sensor response and recovery time. Here, we report an atomically dispersed metal ion strategy to address it. We discover that bimetallic PbCdSe quantum dot (QD) gels containing atomically dispersed Pb ionic sites achieve the optimal combination of strong sensor response and fast recovery, leading to a high-performance room-temperature p-type semiconductor NO 2 sensor as characterized by a combination of ultra–low limit of detection, high sensitivity and stability, fast response and recovery. With the help of theoretical calculations, we reveal the high performance of the PbCdSe QD gel arises from the unique tuning effects of Pb ionic sites on NO 2 binding at their neighboring Cd sites.

Effects of Solidification Cooling Rates on Microstructures and Physical Properties of Fe-6.5%Si Alloys

Compared to the widely used Fe-3.2wt%Si steel, Fe-6.5wt%Si has superior electric and magnetic properties, including higher electrical resistivity, lower iron loss, higher permeability, and near zero magnetostriction. However, Fe-6.5wt%Si sheet is difficult to produce using traditional manufacturing processes as the high silicon content favors the formation of ordered phases that embrittle the material. Fortunately, these ordered phases can be suppressed if the alloy is cooled fast enough from a high temperature kinetically trapping the disordered solid solution or amorphous state. Planar flow casting is known for its rapid solidification rate. In order to consider it as a viable method to manufacture ductile Fe-6.5wt%Si sheets, the effect of cooling rate on physical properties of Fe-6.5wt%Si alloy are systematically investigated. In this work, various cooling rates are achieved by changing melt-spin wheel speeds, which significantly affect the solidification temperature profile and have profound effects on ordering, microstructures, textures, hardness, and magnetic properties. High cooling rates result in refined grains, reduced ordering, enhanced <100> out of the plane texture, decreased hardness, and increased coercivity. This study demonstrates a critical cooling rate at ~1.7 × 10 5 K/s, corresponding to a tangential wheel speed of 5-7 m/s, below which the hardness significantly increases in agreement with the sudden increase of the ordered phases that causes the material embrittlement.

A willow sex chromosome reveals convergent evolution of complex palindromic repeats

Background: Sex chromosomes have arisen independently in a wide variety of species, yet they share common characteristics, including the presence of suppressed recombination surrounding sex determination loci. Mammalian sex chromosomes contain multiple palindromic repeats across the non-recombining region that show sequence conservation through gene conversion and contain genes that are crucial for sexual reproduction. In plants, it is not clear if palindromic repeats play a role in maintaining sequence conservation in the absence of homologous recombination. Results: Here we present the first evidence of large palindromic structures in a plant sex chromosome, based on a highly contiguous assembly of the W chromosome of the dioecious shrub Salix purpurea . The W chromosome has an expanded number of genes due to transpositions from autosomes. It also contains two consecutive palindromes that span a region of 200 kb, with conspicuous 20-kb stretches of highly conserved sequences among the four arms that show evidence of gene conversion. Four genes in the palindrome are homologous to genes in the sex determination regions of the closely related genus Populus , which is located on a different chromosome. These genes show distinct, floral-biased expression patterns compared to paralogous copies on autosomes. Conclusion: The presence of palindromes in sex chromosomes of mammals and plants highlights the intrinsic importance of these features in adaptive evolution in the absence of recombination. Convergent evolution is driving both the independent establishment of sex chromosomes as well as their fine-scale sequence structure.
