Probing axion-like particles at the Electron-Ion Collider

Abstract The Electron-Ion Collider (EIC), a forthcoming powerful high-luminosity facility, represents an exciting opportunity to explore new physics. In this article, we study the potential of the EIC to probe the coupling between axion-like particles (ALPs) and photons in coherent scattering. The ALPs can be produced via photon fusion and decay back to two photons inside the EIC detector. In a prompt-decay search, we find that the EIC can set the most stringent bound form a ≲ 20 GeV and probe the effective scales Λ ≲ 10 5 GeV. In a displaced-vertex search, which requires adopting an EM calorimeter technology that provides directionality, the EIC could probe ALPs withm a ≲ 1 GeV at effective scales Λ ≲ 10 7 GeV. Combining the two search strategies, the EIC can probe a significant portion of unexplored parameter space in the 0.2 a< 20 GeV mass range.

Different feeding patterns affect meat quality of Tibetan pigs associated with intestinal microbiota alterations

This study aimed to investigate the effects of different feeding patterns on meat quality, gut microbiota and its metabolites of Tibetan pigs. Tibetan pigs with similar body weight were fed the high energy diets ( HEP , 20 pigs) and the regular diets ( RFP , 20 pigs), and free-ranging Tibetan pigs ( FRP , 20 pigs) were selected as the reference. After 6 weeks of experiment, meat quality indexes of semitendinosus muscle ( SM ) and cecal microbiota were measured. The results of meat quality demonstrated that the shear force of pig SM in FRP group was higher than that in HEP and RFP groups ( p < 0.001); the pH-value of SM in HEP pigs was higher at 45 min ( p < 0.05) and lower at 24 h ( p < 0.01) after slaughter than that in FRP and RFP groups; the SM lightness ( L* value) of FRP pigs increased compared with RFP and HEP groups ( p < 0.001), while the SM redness ( a* value) of FRP pigs was higher than that of RFP group ( p < 0.05). The free fatty acid ( FA ) profile exhibited that the total FAs and unsaturated FAs of pig SM in HEP and RFP groups were higher than those in FRP group ( p < 0.05); the RFP pigs had more reasonable FA composition with higher n-3 polyunsaturated FAs ( PUFAs ) and lower n-6/n-3 PUFA ratio than HEP pigs ( p < 0.05). Based on that, we observed that Tibetan pigs fed high energy diets (HEP) had lower microbial α-diversity in cecum ( p < 0.05), and distinct feeding patterns exhibited a different microbial cluster. Simultaneously, the short-chain FA levels in cecum of FRP and RFP pigs were higher compared with HEP pigs ( p < 0.05). A total of 11 genera related to muscle lipid metabolism or meat quality, including Alistipes , Anaerovibrio , Acetitomaculun , etc., were identified under different feeding patterns ( p < 0.05). Spearman correlation analysis demonstrated that alterations of free FAs in SM were affected by the genera Prevotellaceae_NK3B31_group , Prevotellaceae UCG-003 and Christensenellaceae_R-7_group ( p < 0.05). Taken together, distinct feeding patterns affected meat quality of Tibetan pigs related to gut microbiota alterations.

Speculations on the W-mass measurement at CDF*

Abstract The W mass determination at the Tevatron CDF experiment reported a deviation from the SM expectation at the 7 σ level. We discuss a few possible interpretations and their collider implications. We perform electroweak global fits under various frameworks and assumptions. We consider three types of electroweak global fits in the effective-field-theory framework: the S - T , S - T - , and eight-parameter flavor-universal one. We discuss the amounts of tensions between different measurements reflected in these fits and the corresponding shifts in central values of these parameters. With these electroweak fit pictures in hand, we present a few different classes of models and discuss their compatibility with these results. We find that while explaining the discrepancy, the single gauge boson extensions face strong LHC direct search constraints unless the is fermiophobic (leptophobic), which can be realized if extra vector fermions (leptons) mix with the SM fermions (leptons). Vector-like top partners can partially generate the needed shift to the electroweak observables. The compatibility with the top squark is also studied in detail. We find that the non-degenerate top squark soft masses enhance the needed operator coefficients, enabling an allowed explanation compatible with current LHC measurements. Overall, more theoretical and experimental developments are highly in demand to reveal the physics behind this discrepancy.

Probing Axion-Like-Particles at the CERN Gamma Factory

We report the aim of the proposed CERN Gamma Factory is to produce ≈10 17 photons per second with energies up to 400 MeV. The photon beam intensity is expected to be a factor of $\mathcal{O}$(10 7 ) larger than that of the presently available photon beams in the MeV energy range. In this work, its potential to probe physics beyond the Standard Model is explored. In particular, searches for axion like particles (ALPs) with dominant couplings to photons are discussed and various production scenarios - fixed target, photon-photon collision, and conversion by a magnetic field - and detection schemes considered - via decay to photons or back-conversion. It is found that the Gamma Factory in a fixed target mode can probe ALPs with mass m a ≲ $\mathcal{O}$(100 MeV) and decay constants larger than 10 7 GeV, improving by an order of magnitude the discovery potential of previous beam dump experiments.
