China's plug-in hybrid electric vehicle transition: An operational carbon perspective

Assessing the emissions of plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV) operations is crucial for accelerating the carbon–neutral transition in the passenger car sector. This study is the first to adopt a bottom-up model to measure the real-world energy use and carbon dioxide emissions of China’s top twenty selling PHEV models across different regions from 2020 to 2022. The results indicate that (1) the actual electricity intensity of the best-selling PHEV models (20.2–38.2 kWh/100 km) was 30–40 % higher than the New European Driving Cycle values, and the actual gasoline intensity (4.7–23.5 L/100 km) was 3–6 times greater than the New European Driving Cycle values. (2) The overall energy use of the best-selling models varied among different regions, and the energy use from 2020 to 2022 in Southern China was double that Northern China and the Yangtze River Middle Reach. (3) The top-selling models emitted 4.7 megatons of carbon dioxide nationwide from 2020 to 2022, with 1.9 megatons released by electricity consumption and 2.8 megatons released by gasoline combustion. Furthermore, targeted policy implications for expediting the carbon–neutral transition within the passenger car sector are proposed. In essence, this study explores and compares benchmark data at both the national and regional levels, along with performance metrics associated with PHEV operations. The main objective is to aid nationwide decarbonization efforts, focusing on carbon reduction and promoting the rapid transition of road transportation toward a net-zero carbon future.

Superstructures and magnetic order in heavily Cu-substituted ( Fe 1 – x Cu x ) 1 + y Te

Most iron-based superconductors exhibit stripe-type magnetism, characterized by the ordering vector Q = ($\frac{1}{2},\frac{1}{2}$). In contrast, Fe 1+y Te, the parent compound of the Fe 1+y Te 1–x Se x superconductors, exhibits double-stripe magnetic order associated with the ordering vector Q = ($\frac{1}{2},0$). Here, we use elastic neutron scattering to investigate heavily Cu-substituted (Fe 1–x Cu x ) 1+y Te compounds and reveal that (1) for x ≳ 0.4, short-range magnetic order emerges around the stripe-type vector at Q = ($\frac{1}{2}$ ± δ, $\frac{1}{2}$ ± δ, $\frac{1}{2}$) with δ ≈ 0.05; (2) the short-range magnetic order is associated with a superstructure modulation at Q = ($\frac{1}{3},\frac{1}{3},\frac{1}{2}$), with the magnetic correlation length shorter than that for the superstructure; and (3) for x ≳ 0.55, we observe an additional intergrown phase with higher Cu content, characterized by a superstructure modulation vector Q = ($\frac{1}{3},\frac{1}{3},0$) and magnetic peaks at Q = ($\frac{2}{3},\frac{1}{3},\frac{1}{2}$)/($\frac{1}{3},\frac{2}{3},\frac{1}{2}$). The positions of superstructure peaks suggest that relative to the tetragonal unit cell of Fe 1+y Te, heavy Cu substitution leads to Fe-Cu orderings that expand the unit cell by $\sqrt{2}$ × 3$\sqrt{2}$ times in the ab plane, corroborated by first-principles calculations that suggest the formation of spin chains and spin ladders. Finally, our findings show that stripe-type magnetism is common in magnetically diluted iron pnictides and chalcogenides, despite the varying associated atomic orderings

The Influence of Temperature Inversion on the Vertical Distribution of Aerosols

Temperature inversion plays an important role in the accumulation and diffusion of aerosols. In this study, the relationship between temperature inversion and the vertical distribution of aerosols is investigated based on Raman lidar observations taken from January 2010 to September 2015 at the Atmospheric Radiation Measurement site in the Southern Great Plains, USA. First, the diurnal and seasonal variations of the surface-based inversion (SBI) and elevated temperature inversion (EI) are investigated. The results indicate that the occurrence frequency of SBI and EI have different seasonal trends. SBI has the highest frequency in summer, while EI has the highest frequency in winter. The diurnal variation of SBI is obvious, with a higher frequency in nighttime and a lower frequency in daytime. The inversion intensity (ΔT) and inversion depth (ΔZ) of SBI and EI have consistent diurnal and seasonal trends. The effects of SBI and EI on the vertical distribution of aerosols are then analyzed. The mean aerosol optical depth (AOD) below the SBI height shows a clear seasonal variation, which is consistent with the seasonal trends of ΔT and ΔZ. This phenomenon also occurs on the AOD below EI top height. The sensitivity analysis shows that the mean AOD below SBI height or EI top height increases with an increase of the ΔT and ΔZ of SBI (EI). It indicates that ΔT and ΔZ are the key factors affecting the vertical distribution of aerosols. In addition, the variation of AOD below and above EI top height is opposite to that of AOD below and above EI bottom height under different ΔT and ΔZ conditions. The correlation coefficients between ΔT (ΔZ) of EI with AOD in EI were 0.62 (0.65). These results indicate that the space between EI bottom height and EI top height can store aerosols. The larger the ΔZ of EI, the more aerosols are stored. These findings contribute to our understanding of the effect of temperature inversion on the vertical distribution of aerosols.

Binding of saturated and unsaturated C 6 -hydrocarbons to the electrophilic anion [B 12 Br 11 ] – : a systematic mechanistic study

The highly reactive gaseous ion [B 12 Br 11 ] – is a metal-free closed-shell anion which spontaneously forms covalent bonds with hydrocarbon molecules, including alkanes. Herein, we systematically investigate the reaction mechanism for binding of [B 12 Br 11 ] – to the five hexane isomers yielding [B 12 Br 11 (C 6 H 14 )] – , as well as to cyclohexane and several hexene isomers (yielding [B 12 Br 11 (C 6 H 12 )] – ) using collision-induced dissociation (CID), infrared photodissociation spectroscopy (IRPD) and computational methods. CID of the different [B 12 Br 11 (C 6 H 14 )] – ions results in distinct fragmentation patterns dependent on the structure of the hexane isomer. Further, the observed fragmentation reactions provide insights into the addition mechanism of [B 12 Br 11 ] – to hexane. Based on the observed CID patterns, we identified that either B–C bond formation through heterolytic C–C or C–H bond cleavages or B–H bond formation through heterolytic C–H cleavage occur dependent on the structure of the hexane isomer. Meanwhile, we observe identical CID spectra of adducts originating from isomers of C 6 H 12 . Spectroscopic investigations of adducts of 1-hexene and cyclohexane indicate the same product structure with an open C 6 chain. Computational investigations evidenced that low lying transition states are present, which enable a ring opening reaction of cyclohexane when binding to [B 12 Br 11 ] – .

Critical role of orbital hybridization in the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction of magnetic interfaces

Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction (DMI), an interfacial spin-orbit coupling (ISOC)-related effect, has become foundational for spintronic research and magnetic memory and computing technologies. However, the underlying mechanism of DMI, including the quantitative role of ISOC, has remained a long-standing unsettled problem due to the great challenge in quantifying and widely tuning ISOC strength in a strong DMI material system. Here, we find that DMI, ISOC, and orbital hybridization at the model magnetic interface Au 1-x Pt x /Co can be quantified and tuned significantly at the same time through the composition of the Au 1-x Pt x , without varying the bulk SOC and the electronegativity. From this ability, we establish that the widespread expectation that DMI should scale in linear proportion to ISOC breaks down at the Au 1-x Pt x /Co interface where degree of orbital hybridization varies with the Au 1-x Pt x composition and that the unexpected DMI behaviors can be understood well by the critical role of orbital hybridization. Our study provides a quantitative frame for comprehensively understanding interfacial DMI of various magnetic interfaces and establishes orbital hybridization as a new degree of freedom for controlling DMI in high-performance chiral domain wall/skyrmion devices and ultrafast magnetic tunnel junctions.

Direct functionalization of C-H bonds by electrophilic anions

Bond formation between two of the most inert molecules, alkanes and [B12X12]2- (X = Cl, Br), is performed in a two step process. Fragmentation of [B12X12]2- in the gas phase generates highly reactive [B12X11]- ions which spontaneously react with alkanes. The reaction mechanism was investigated using tandem mass spectrometry and gas-phase vibrational spectroscopy combined with electronic structure calculations. This effort revealed the unprecedented and counterintuitive electrophilic substitution of a proton in an alkane by a negatively charged ion resulting in a B-C bond formation. The product is a dianionic [B12X11CnH2n+1]2- species, in which H+ is electrostatically bound to the dianion. High flux ion soft-landing was performed to co-deposit [B12X11]- and complex organic molecules (phthalates) in thin layers on surfaces. Molecular structure analysis of the product films revealed that C-H functionalization by [B12X11]- occured in the presence of other more reactive functional groups. This observation demonstrates the utility of highly reactive fragment ions for defined bond formation processes and may pave the way to the use of gas phase ion chemistry for chemical synthesis in the condensed phase.

Study of the perpendicular magnetic anisotropy, spin–orbit torque, and Dzyaloshinskii–Moriya interaction in the heavy metal/CoFeB bilayers with Ir 22 Mn 78 insertion

The perpendicular magnetic anisotropy (PMA), current-induced spin–orbit torques (SOTs), and Dzyaloshinskii–Moriya interaction (DMI) in the as-grown W or Ta/Ir 22 Mn 78 (IrMn)/CoFeB/MgO stacks with varying IrMn layer thicknesses were investigated. The in-plane magnetized W/CoFeB/MgO sample becomes perpendicularly magnetized after inserting the IrMn layer without the requirement of the annealing process. The effective magnetization fields 4π Meff show a nonmonotonic dependence on the IrMn layer thickness, which reaches the maximum in magnitude at a thickness of tIrMn = 0.75 nm. The SOT effective fields corresponding to damping-like and field-like torques decrease with the insertion layer thickness. Moreover, the variation of the IrMn layer thickness leads to the change of the DMI in magnitude and sign change from positive (favoring right-handed chirality) to negative (favoring left-handed chirality). The realization of changing the PMA, SOTs, and DMI by inserting the IrMn layer provides more flexibility in the design of spintronic devices.
