Scenario Creation and Power-Conditioning Strategies for Operating Power Grids with Two-Stage Stochastic Economic Dispatch

A significant difficulty associated with the use of stochastic programming to solve optimal power flow problems on a 5-minute timescale is the quality of renewable energy scenarios input by the user. This is especially true when considering power systems with high penetrations of renewable energy, e.g. wind power. This paper introduces the use of stochastic programming to solve the DC optimal power flow problem with scenarios drawn directly from high-fidelity data sets. Hence, the proposed method avoids the problem of lost physics by finding high-fidelity analogs that can describe future states of the system. Furthermore, this method can be simply extended to output multi-period scenarios to the stochastic program. We demonstrate the effectiveness of this technique by simulating dispatch operations on a synthetic test system over the course of a week.

A MIMO AAA Agorithm for Frequency Dependent Line Modeling

Modeling of power distribution system components that are valid for a wide range of frequencies are crucial for highly accurate modeling of electromagnetic transient (EMT) events. This has recently become of interest due to the improvements needed for the resilient operation of distribution systems. Vector fitting (VF) is a very popular and commonly used algorithm for wide band representations of power system components in EMT simulations. In this research, we present a new multi-input rational approximation algorithm (MIAAA) and illustrate its advantages with respect to VF using examples of approximations of admittance matrices discussed in the literature. We show that MIAAA not only outperforms VF in terms of achieving better accuracy using lesser number of poles, but also has no numerical issues achieving convergence. In contrast to VF, MIAAA is not sensitive to the location of input sample points and it does not require good estimates for the location of the desired approximation poles. The novelty of this research work is the use of recent mathematical results to solve existing challenges in distribution system modeling and to develop rational approximations for power system models that intend to be optimal in terms of accuracy and performance.

Use of Traveling Wave Signatures in Medium-Voltage Distribution Systems for Fault Detection and Location

Protection systems are a critical feature for the proper operation of a power grid. Protection systems should be able to quickly detect, identify, locate, and isolate the faults within a time frame that prevents damage to grid components and reduces customer outages. As more inverter-based photovoltaics (PV) are integrated into the grid, phasor domain based protection schemes become more inaccurate due to low levels of fault current from inverters or respond too slowly to accurately identify fault conditions. This points to the need to identify and develop novel protection approaches for distribution systems with high penetration of inverter based PV. The main objective of the project is to develop new time domain-based protection schemes to enable more accurate and faster detection, identification and location of faults in distribution systems and/or microgrids with high penetration of inverter-based PV. Our approach aims to exploit the traveling waves that are generated during a fault or other disturbances in the grid.

Visualization of Multi-Fidelity Approximations of Stochastic Economic Dispatch

As renewable energy generation deployment increases, the operation of electrical grids becomes more complex. Economic dispatch is part of a grid operator's regular decision process where the amount of energy to generate is determined based on the number of available generators and the actual level of energy demand. Renewable generators are inherently stochastic due to the chaotic nature of weather patterns, and thus, real-time decisions of economic dispatch become increasingly complex. Modeling efforts to assist in these decisions in the highest fidelity typically take hours to days to solve on leadership-class computers; too long for the 5-minute operational time-frame demanded of operators. Alternatively, multi-fidelity approximations can be used to predict generation levels quickly and with sufficient accuracy to be used for real-time operations. We have developed a visualization tool to demonstrate the utility of multi-fidelity approximations by displaying contextual results of economic dispatch approximations, comparisons across fidelity levels of generation levels and possible failures to meet demand, and meta-data on the modeling setup.

Scalable Transmission Expansion Under Uncertainty Using Three-Stage Stochastic Optimization

The intermittent nature of renewable energy poses new challenges for power grids due to its variable and uncertain power output. These features of renewable generation are becoming more relevant to transmission planning as grids reach higher penetration levels of renewable energy. In this paper we present an approach for transmission planning based on scalable computational approaches which enable the explicit consideration of operational uncertainties in the planning process. Using three-stage stochastic programming and the progressive hedging algorithm, we compute transmission expansion decisions on a modified RTS-GMLC test system. We augment the grid with large amounts of wind generation and consider many operational scenarios subject to wind uncertainty.
