SPACE: the SPectroscopic, All-Sky Cosmic Explorer

We describe the scientific motivations, the mission concept and the instrumentation of SPACE, a class-M mission proposed for concept study at the first call of the ESA Cosmic-Vision 2015-2025 planning cycle. SPACE aims at producing the largest three-dimensional evolutionary map of the Universe over the past 10 billion years by taking near-IR spectra and measuring redshifts of more than half a billion galaxies at 0 < z < 2 down to AB approximately 23 over 37r sr of the sky. In addition, SPACE will also target a smaller sky field, performing a deep spectroscopic survey of millions of galaxies to AB approximately 26 and at 2 < z < l0+. Owing to the depth, redshift range, volume coverage and quality of its spectra, SPACE will reveal with unique sensitivity most of the fundamental cosmological signatures, including the power spectrum of density fluctuations and its turnover, the baryonic acoustic oscillations imprinted when matter and radiation decoupled, the distance-luminosity relation of cosmological supernovae, the evolution of the cosmic expansion rate, the growth rate of cosmic large-scale structure, the large scale distribution of galaxies. The datasets from the SPACE mission will represent a long lasting legacy that will be data mined for many years to come.

A red envelope around a dominant elliptical galaxy in an X-ray selected poor cluster

A photometric and spectroscopic study of the optical counterpart of the X-ray source 1E 1111.9-3754 has revealed a poor cluster of galaxies dominated by a very luminous giant elliptical. Three-color surface photometry of this galaxy shows that the elliptical body is surrounded by a large envelope with colors redder than the galaxy. The formation of this system in a high velocity dispersion poor cluster is briefly discussed.

1E 0116.3-0116 - A peculiar, X-ray-bright early-type galaxy

The identification of 1E 0116.3-0116 with an E3 galaxy belonging to a sparse group of galaxies makes this object worthy of study. The optical spectrum of the galaxy exhibits no nuclear activity, and its radio emission is consistent with early-type galaxy status. In the event that the gas is isothermal, its surface brightness profile yields a total mass greater than 10 to the 13th solar masses. The cooling time of the gas is on average of the same order as the Hubble time.

The properties of X-ray selected BL Lac objects

The optical and radio properties of the X-ray-selected BL Lacs in the Einstein Medium sensitivity Survey (EMSS) are presented and compared with those of the HEAO 1 A-2 sample and with those of radio-selected BL Lacs. Definite redshifts are determined for two of four EMSS BL Lacs and a probable redshift if determined for a third. The number-flux relation of BL Lacs is found to show a drastic flattening below fluxes of order 10 to the -12th erg/sq cm/s; this is interpreted as evidence that BL Lac do not share the evolutionary properties of quasars.

On the surface density of X-ray selected BL Lacertae objects

Only a handful of BL Lac objects have been found as a result of systematic optical identification of serendipitous Einstein X-ray sources. By combining the data from two flux-limited complete X-ray surveys (the HEAO 1 A-2 and the Einstein Observatory Medium Sensitivity Survey) the surface density of X-ray emitting BL Lac objects is evaluated as a function of their X-ray flux. It is found that a single power law is not an acceptable representation of the BL Lac objects' X-ray log N-log S. The number-flux relationship is consistent with the Euclidean slope at 'high' flux levels but shows a drastic flattnring below fluxes of the order of 10 to the -12th ergs per sq cm/s. The implications of this result are briefly discussed with respect to the luminosity function, the cosmological evolution, and the X-ray to optical flux ratio in BL Lac objects.

The X-ray spectra of the BL Lacertae objects PKS 0548 - 322 and 3C 66A

Einstein Observatory simultaneous imaging proportional counter and monitor proportional counter data are combined in order to derive the energy spectra of the BL Lac objects PKS 0548-322 and 3C 66A between 0.2 and 10 keV. While the latter is found to be variable in both intensity and spectral shape, the former, although constant in the present data, is found to have experienced a spectrum variation in view of results from other experiments. Attention is given to the implications of flux and spectral variability in BL Lac objects for models of X-ray emission mechanisms. It is suggested that the wide spread of the spectral index distribution is due to the detection of the highly variable synchrotron-produced X-rays that are generally undetected in QSOs.
