Radio interferometry for international study of the earthquake mechanism

Consideration of the possibility of developing an improved technique for measuring crustal deformations over distances of hundreds to thousands of kilometers to even intercontinental distances. Attention is focused on the uses of very long baseline interferometry in the structuring of a transportable radio interferometer system capable of high-accuracy three-dimensional earth surveying. In particular, the essential elements of a system called astronomical radio interferometric earth surveying are described. This system involves the use of a pair of antennas, one fixed and one portable, which simultaneously receive random radio signals emitted from an extragalactic radio source. A combination of a readily transportable small-diameter dish for use during a limited period at a remote site with a larger-diameter antenna with a better receiver is recommended.

Very Long Baseline Interferometry (VLBI) earth physics

The characteristics of the Michelson/Pease stellar interferometer are discussed. An analog of the interferometer using radio waves is described. The use of a conventional hard-wired interferometer with very long base line interferometry (VLBI) is analyzed. Mathematical models are developed to analyze the VLBI techniques. A summary of VLBI geodetic experiments is tabulated. The concept and application of the astronomical radio interferometric earth surveys (ARIES) are reported. A schematic diagram of ARIES implementation is provided.

Probing the solar plasma with Mariner radio tracking data

The range and Doppler radio tracking close to the sun made it possible to measure solar plasma dynamics. These were measured by means of a method known as differenced range versus integrated Doppler, which exploits the opposite change of group and phase velocity as the plasma density changes along the radio raypath. A simple solar plasma propagation model is proposed.
