Enhanced Catalytic Activity of a Vanadium-Doped Mesoporous Octahedral Molecular Sieve-2 (K-OMS-2) toward Hydrogen Evolution Reaction
Hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) is the cathodic reaction in electrochemical water splitting that produces H 2 in a renewable pathway, primarily to be used in fuel cells. K-OMS-2, a manganese octahedral molecular sieve, has the potential to replace Pt as a catalyst for HER due to its redox and electrochemical properties, which can be further improved by doping metal cations into the K-OMS-2 framework. In this work, we synthesized 1, 5, and 10% vanadium- (V) doped mesoporous K-OMS-2 under mild acidic reaction conditions. Here, the mesoporous nature of the samples was confirmed by BET analysis. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy confirmed that Mn has 2+, 3 +, and 4+ oxidation states, and V is present as V 4+ in V-K-OMS-2 samples. HER performance of 1% V-K-OMS-2 in an acidic medium shows the best activity with -0.32 V overpotential. The overpotential was lowered by 0.56 V upon doping 1% V into the K-OMS-2 framework. The 1% V-K-OMS-2 material has a Tafel slope of 129 mV/decay and an electrochemically active surface area (ECSA) of 127.5 cm 2 ECSA .
Enhanced visible-light-assisted peroxymonosulfate activation on cobalt-doped mesoporous iron oxide for orange II degradation
Sulfate radical-based advanced oxidation processes (SR-AOP) attracted a lot of attention due to their capability and adaptability in wastewater treatment. Although heterogeneous cobalt-based catalysts have been extensively studied and have emerged superior for peroxymonosulfate (PMS) activation, leaching of cobalt is still a major concern. Herein, we report a photo-assisted PMS activation approach using cobalt doped mesoporous iron oxide with exceptional activity and stability up to 7 cycles with very low cobalt leaching (0.5 ppm). The highest activity was obtained by 1 mol % cobalt doped mesoporous iron oxide. Orange II dye was completely degraded by the reactive oxygen species (ROS) generated under visible light irradiation within 1 min. ROS were evaluated using two distinct techniques (Fluorescence probes and Electron Paramagnetic Resonance (EPR). ROS quenching experiments were also used to highlight the dominant pathway. This study correlates the structural and electronic changes induced with cobalt doping to the exceptional activity.
Highly microporous Parinari Curatellifolia carbon nanomaterials for supercapacitors
High surface area nanostructured electrodes are essential for understanding charge storage mechanisms in high capacitance supercapacitors. Additionally, a growing number of studies provide credible evidence that the highest capacitance in carbon nanomaterials is attainable only when the pore size is in micropore range. In this study therefore, micropore-dominatedcarbon materials derived from Parinari curatellifolia (PC) waste seeds are prepared via pyrolysis and subsequent chemical activation with KOH. SEM, EDAX, TEM, Raman, and XRD studies show that the microstructure and composition of the as-prepared microporous carbon materials are influenced by adjusting the KOH to carbon mass ratio. Sorption studies demonstrate a very high BET surface area of 1898 m 2 g –1 , type I isotherm, and 99% micropore content in all the samples. The BET surface area, S micro , V micro , and total volume increased with increasing KOH content during activation. The fabricated electrodes exhibit high specific capacitances of 423 F g –1 at 5 mV s –1 and cyclic stability of 98% after 50000 cycles both of which are indicative of our carbon materials huge potential in making high performance supercapacitors. The specific capacitance increased with the micropore content in the samples signifying that the pores enhanced diffusion and hence the charge storage. The PC carbon materials deliver high specific capacitance due to the enhancement of diffusion and charge storage stemming from the synergetic interplay of the aforementioned textural parameters. As a result, the PC carbon materials therefore provide good prospects for supercapacitor applications.
