Two systems analyses of SETI

The problem of receiving and identifying a single microwave signal transmitted by extraterrestrial intelligent beings is analyzed in the cases where the signal is designed to catch our attention and the signal is designed for internal purposes of another civilization. Six variables which yield uncertainty as to the exact signal which should be searched for are described: polarization, modulation, flux level, direction, frequency (including bandwidth and drift rate), and time. It is shown that if all reasonable variations of these parameters are to be examined sequentially for 1000 seconds, the search would take over a million times longer than the age of the Universe. Ways to simplify the search are considered, including widening the frequency bin, selecting specific targets, cutting the observation time, using a Fourier transform device for data processing, and building larger antennas as well as better low-noise receivers.

Interstellar communication

The paper discusses a project in which the possibility of receiving signals from another civilization in our galaxy is being studied. The main question is in what electromagnetic frequency band should the search for such signals be conducted. Possible bands are discussed in terms of quantum costs and attainable signal-to-noise ratios. Of particular interest is the 'water hole', the range of frequencies from 1.420 to 1.662 GHz, with fundamental frequency in the Galaxy being the hydrogen line at 1.420 GHz. A plan for searching this band is described, in which the contemplated system would have a capability of detecting a 1000-Megawatt omnidirectional beacon at a distance of 10,000 light years.

The engineering of large-scale systems.

The definition of the concept of what is a system in engineering is analyzed, and characteristics are suggested for consideration as a basis for such a concept. Simulation/symbolic models, structural/empirical models and descriptive/normative models are discussed as useful devices for systems design and analysis.
