Radiographic applications of spatial frequency multiplexing

The application of spacial frequency encoding techniques which allow different regions of the X-ray spectrum to be encoded on conventional radiographs was studied. Clinical considerations were reviewed, as were experimental studies involving the encoding and decoding of X-ray images at different energies and the subsequent processing of the data to produce images of specific materials in the body.

Iodine imaging using spectral analysis

Existing radiographic imaging systems provide images which represent an integration or averaging over the energy spectrum. In order to provide noninvasive angiography it is necessary to image the relatively small amounts of iodine which are available following an intravenous administration. This is accomplished by making use of the special spectral characteristics of iodine. Two methods will be presented. One involves a special grating for encoding the iodine information in the form of a fine line pattern. This is subsequently decoded to provide images of iodinated structures which are otherwise almost invisible. The second method utilizes a scanned X-ray beam which is rapidly switched in the high energy region. In this region, iodine experiences significant variations in the attenuation coefficient while bone and soft tissue do not. An efficient and accurate X-ray detector can be used with scanned X-ray beams. This provides a high degree of sensitivity enabling the visualization of small vessels containing relatively dilute iodine.

Encoding and decoding of color information using two-dimensional spatial filtering.

Spatial frequency encoding is described as it applies to both photographic and television systems. In each case, color separations amplitude modulate spatial frequency carriers. The photographic system separates the carriers in the two-dimensional Fourier transform plane using coherent optics; the television system employs a two-dimensional electrical filter to perform the same separation. These filters are synthesized so that the two-dimensional bandwidths of the television camera are used efficiently. Nonlinear processing techniques are also described to minimize crosstalk between channels.

Facsimile bandwidth compression using nonlinear analog processing.

A system is presented for reducing the number of picture elements in a scanned image by an order of magnitude while preserving the detail contrast. Starting with high-resolution data a 3 x 3 matrix of input elements is compressed into a single output element using a nonlinear algorithm. Optimum results are obtained by including the data on the outer periphery of the input sample in the processing algorithm thus requiring a 5 x 5 input matrix. Experimental results are presented using weather satellite photographs. This system has application in those cases where the sensor has higher resolution capability than the communication link can support.
