Performance of PIP-II high-beta 650 cryomodule after transatlantic shipping

After shipment to the Daresbury Lab and return to Fermilab, the prototype HB650 cryomodule underwent another phase of 2K RF testing to ascertain any performance issues that may have arisen from the transport of the cryomodule. While measurements taken at room temperature after the conclusion of shipment indicated that there were no negative impacts on cavity alignment, beamline vacuum, or cavity frequency, testing at 2K was required to validate other aspects such as tuner operation, cavity coupling, cryogenic system integrity, and cavity performance. Results of this latest round of limited 2K testing will be presented.

Optimization of static heat loads of the PIP-II cryomodules based on prototype HB650 cryomodule test results

During the first cool down of the prototype HB650 cryomodule (pHB650 CM), high static heat loads have been measured compared to the estimation. Several analysis and calculations have been performed to explain this difference which led to cool down this cryomodule two additional times. Before each cool down, repairs and upgrades have been done, and instrumentations were added to identify the issues and quantify their impact on the heat loads. Based on these findings, the production cryomodule design and assembly process have been updated to align the future heat loads measurements with the estimations.

Design of Muon Campus Full Flow Purifier for Varying Operational Conditions and Horizontal Shipping

The Muon Campus g-2 experiment requires stable helium supply at 5 K to the superconducting magnet. After a short period of operations, the pressure drop across the magnet’s flow supply valve increases due to impurities, resulting in reduced excess capacity concurrently with drop in refrigerator expander efficiency. This requires periodic powering down of the magnet to allow for helium valve “flush” to remove accumulated contamination at the valve as well as warming up the refrigerator expander above 80 K to release contamination. A “mobile” purifier is used for this periodic process but only at 10% of total refrigerator flow such that the purification process is extended. After long duration of running, this purification procedure is required almost every two weeks to restore proper liquid helium supply to the magnet. This shows requirement for full flow purifier which can purify impurities from entire Muon Campus refrigerator system and mitigate existing impurities issue and associated experiment downtime.

LCLS-II and HE Cryomodule Microphonics at CMTF at Fermilab

Microphonics causes the cavity to detune. This study discusses the microphonics of 16 cryomodules, 14 for LCLS-II and 2 for LCLS-II HE tested at CMTF. The peak detuning, as well as the RMS detuning for each cryomodule, will be discussed. For each cryomodule, the data was taken with enough soaking time to prevent any thermalization effects which can show up in the detuning. Each data capture taken was 30 minutes or longer and sampled at 1 kHz.

Beam Commissioning and Integrated Test of the PIP-II Injector Test Facility

The PIP-II Injector Test (PIP2IT) facility is a near-complete low energy portion of the Superconducting PIP-II linac driver. PIP2IT comprises the warm front end and the first two PIP-II superconducting cryomodules. PIP2IT is designed to accelerate a 2 mA H⁻ beam to an energy of 20 MeV. The facility serves as a testbed for a number of advanced technologies required to operate PIP-II and provides an opportunity to gain experience with commissioning of the superconducting linac, significantly reducing project technical risks. Some PIP2IT components are contributions from international partners, who also lend their expertise to the accelerator project. The project has been successfully commissioned with the beam in 2021, demonstrating the performance required for the LBNF/DUNE. In this paper, we describe the facility and its critical systems. We discuss our experience with the integrated testing and beam commissioning of PIP2IT, and present commissioning results. This important milestone ushers in a new era at Fermilab of proton beam delivery using superconducting radio-frequency accelerators.

LCLS-II-HE Cryomodule Testing at Fermilab

22 Linac Coherent Light Source II (LCLS-II) cryomodules were successfully tested at the Cryomodule Test Facility (CMTF) at Fermilab. Following the completion of the LCLS-II testing program, CMTF has shifted to testing cryomodules for the LCLS-II High Energy upgrade (LCLS-II-HE). The first LCLS-II-HE cryomodule, the verification cryomodule (vCM), was successfully tested and verified the readiness of LCLS-II-HE cryomodule testing at CMTF, and production cryomodule testing has begun. Presented here are the production cryomodule test acceptance criteria, testing plan, and cryomodule test results so far.

LCSL-II Cryomodule Testing at Fermilab

Cold powered testing of all LCLS-II production cryomodules at Fermilab is complete as of February 2021. A total of twenty-five tests on both 1.3 GHz and 3.9 GHz cryomodules were conducted over a nearly five year time span beginning in the summer of 2016. During the course of this campaign cutting-edge results for cavity Q₀ and gradient in continuous wave operation were achieved. A summary of all test results will be presented, with a comparison to established acceptance criteria, as well as overall test stand statistics and lessons learned.
