X-ray induced synthesis of beta tin (β-Sn)

The destabilization of molecular structures via hard X-rays has been previously utilized to synthesize novel compounds. Here, in this study, we report that the monochromatic X-ray induced decomposition of tin(II) oxalate (SnC 2 O 4 ) at ambient and 0.6 GPa pressures lead to the formation of beta tin (β-Sn). At 1 GPa, only the degradation of SnC 2 O 4 crystal structure is observed without any indication of β-Sn at the end of irradiation. The maximum transformation yield is achieved at 0.6 GPa suggesting the critical role of intermolecular distance in X-ray induced synthesis of β-Sn. Moreover, a modified Avrami equation is utilized to describe the kinetics and geometry of structural synthesis at ambient and 0.6 GPa. The obtained results demonstrate that X-ray irradiation can induce photochemical synthetic pathways different from conventional methods (e.g., high pressure, temperature, stoichiometric mixing) and that high pressure (HP) can be considered a tool to control X-ray induced photochemistry.

Crystal structure of perfluorononanoic acid, C 9 HF 17 O 2

The crystal structure of perfluorononanoic acid (PFNA) was solved via parallel tempering using synchrotron powder diffraction data obtained from the Brockhouse X-ray Diffraction and Scattering (BXDS) Wiggler Lower Energy (WLE) beamline at the Canadian Light Source. PFNA crystallizes in monoclinic space group P2 1 /c (#14) with lattice parameters a = 26.172(1) Å, b = 5.6345(2) Å, c = 10.9501(4) Å, and β = 98.752(2)°. The crystal structure is composed of dimers, with pairs of PFNA molecules connected by hydrogen bonds via the carboxylic acid functional groups. The Rietveld-refined structure was compared to a density functional theory-optimized structure, and the root-mean-square Cartesian difference was larger than normally observed for correct powder structures. The powder data likely exhibited evidence of disorder which was not successfully modeled.

A novel means to generate high pressure

Diamond anvil cells are the most popular means of generating pressures above 2 GPa. However, in many experiments, such as nuclear magnetic resonance and x-ray absorption, the metallic pressurizing gasket (which confines much of the sample) represents an occluding barrier that requires a low Z gasket material (e.g., Be), a split gasket, or other means to enable better coupling of the sample to electromagnetic radiation. In this paper, we demonstrate a novel method for generating high pressures that confines the sample just above the plane of the gasket by using a diamond with a laser hole drilled into the center of the tip. The sample is then confined by the hole, which is sealed by a flat gasket that fits over the hole. When load is applied to the diamonds, metal flows from the deformed gasket into the hole thereby pressurizing the sample similarly to how a piston pressurizes gas inside a cylinder. The pressurized sample is above the metallic gasket plane just inside the tip of the diamond, and thus easily accessible via x rays or visible light that skims just above the plane of the gasket providing an enhanced aperture of radiation collection. Furthermore, we have demonstrated the utility of this method by obtaining Raman spectra of SnC 2 O 4 and x-ray diffraction spectra of seleno-DL-cystine, all at high pressures.

Piezochromic Behavior of 2,4,6-Triphenylpyrylium Tetrachloroferrate

In advanced photonics, there is a growing interest in piezochromic luminescent materials that exhibit multicolor switching, driven by their potential applications in optical recording, memory, and sensors. Here, the piezochromic behavior of 2,4,6-triphenylpyrylium tetrachloroferrate (Py-FeCl 4 ) under high pressures from 0 to 9 GPa is reported. The observed multicolor changing properties of Py-FeCl 4 (yellow–orange–red–maroon–black) are found to be fully reversible upon decompression to ambient conditions. The mechanism of Py-FeCl 4 piezochromism is investigated via Raman, infrared, and UV–vis spectroscopy combined with powder X-ray Diffraction. The absence of structural phase transitions as well as the abrupt shifts of bandgap values together with characteristic Raman and IR peaks within 0-9 GPa suggests that the Py-FeCl 4 multicoloring switching behavior is driven by an electron transfer between the inorganic FeCl 4 – anion and the organic pyrylium cation. The obtained results demonstrate that Py-FeCl 4 dye is a good candidate for developing high-pressure sensing technologies designed to function in extreme environments. Moreover, due to the inherent role of molecular-structure relationships in the pyrylium salt's photophysical properties, findings suggest the potential discovery of piezochromic behavior in other pyrylium compounds.
