Solid-State Hydroxide Ion Conductivity in Silver(I) Oxide, Ag 2 O

Silver (I) oxide, Ag 2 O, precipitated as microcrystals by combining aqueous silver(I) nitrate and KOH solutions, was found to be a solid-state hydroxide ion conductor with ionic conductivity on the order of 10 -3 S/cm. The proton chemical shifts at 4.87 and -7.35 ppm measured by solid-state 1H-NMR experiments are attributed to water molecules and in-lattice OH - coordinated to silver, respectively. The lack of spinning sidebands around the 4.87 ppm peak indicates rapid reorientation on the NMR timescale, suggesting that the water molecules are adsorbed to the surface of the Ag 2 O crystals. Pulsed field gradient measurements gave similar diffusion coefficients (2 x 10 -7 cm 2 /s at 298K) for all three proton environments indicating chemical exchange between sites on the millisecond timescale. The activation energy for OH - diffusion measured by NMR (0.18 eV) was comparable to that obtained by conductivity measurements and density functional theory (DFT) electronic structure calculations. Furthermore, the calculated Pourbaix diagram of Ag 2 O is consistent with the slightly lower sample density observed in He pycnometry and thermogravimetric measurements.

Bipolar Membranes With Controlled, Microscale 3D Junctions Enhance the Rates of Water Dissociation and Formation

A soft lithographic method is developed for making bipolar membranes (BPMs) with catalytic junctions formed from arrays of vertically oriented microscale cylinders. The membranes are cast from reusable polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) molds made from silicon masters, which are fabricated on 2" to 4" wafer scales by nanosphere lithography. High-aspect-ratio junctions are made on a length scale similar to the thickness of optimized catalyst layers for water dissociation, creating a platform for probing the dual effects of catalysis and local electric field at the microscale BPM junction. Optimized polymer materials and nanoscale metal oxide catalysts are used in this study. 3D BPMs are tested under reverse and forward bias conditions, exhibiting superior performance relative to their 2D counterparts. Under forward bias in H 2- O 2 fuel cells, 3D BPMs achieve a current density of 1500 mA cm –2 , ≈7 times higher than 2D membranes made from the same materials.

Stabilizing alkaline fuel cells with a niobium-doped brookite titanium dioxide catalyst support

Anion-exchange membrane fuel cells represent a promising and scalable approach for hydrogen energy utilization. However, their development is hindered by the weak bonding between metal catalysts and carbon supports, along with challenges in fabricating electronically/ionically conductive electrodes. Here, we report a composite cathode of Nb-doped brookite TiO 2 nanorods that have robust stability when combined with Pt nanoscale catalysts in an alkaline fuel cell. The composite cathode, fabricated without the addition of an ionomer, delivers a power density of 419 mW cm −2 at a current density of 650 mA cm −2 and a voltage retention of 81% at 100 mA cm −2 after 25 h, substantially outperforming a cathode fabricated from commercial Pt/C. Further investigations of the chemical structure, anion exchange capacity, and mass transfer resistance reveal that a solvent residue derived from N-methylpyrrolidone plays an important role in charge transfer and mass transport in the alkaline fuel cell.

Selective Covalent Basal Plane Modification as a Probe of Hydroxide Ion Conduction Pathways in Magnesium Aluminum Layered Double Hydroxides

Understanding ionic conduction in layered double hydroxides (LDHs) is a crucial step towards utilizing them as solid, hydroxide ion‐conducting electrolytes in energy conversion applications. We selectively modified the interlayer and external surfaces of MgAl LDHs with tris(hydroxymethyl)aminomethane (TRIS) ligands. By adjusting the concentration of the TRIS surface modifier, the LDH basal plane surfaces could be functionalized everywhere (internally and externally) or only externally. External modification resulted in loss of OH‐conductivity compared to pristine LDHs, confirming that external platelet surfaces are the primary ion conduction pathway.
