High Elevation Radiation Array (HERA) detectors for airborne thunderstorm investigations

A high-energy atmospheric physics phenomenon, referred to as a terrestrial gamma ray flash (TGF), is associated with lightning and produces large bursts of energetic photon radiation. TGFs will be investigated using a suite of gamma-ray instruments designed and constructed to fly on ten United States Air Force (USAF) WC-130J Hurricane Hunter aircraft as part of an aircrew ionization study led by the Air Force Institute of Technology (AFIT) and the United States Air Force School of Aerospace Medicine (USAFSAM), in cooperation with the 53rd Weather Reconnaissance Squadron (WRS). Each instrument consists of one NaI and one plastic detector, a GPS timing device, and an instrument computer that performs data acquisition. High Elevation Radiation Array (HERA) detectors will be employed to maximize the chances of observing TGFs near their source and to gain a better understanding of their origin, mechanism, ubiquity, and to assess potential hazards posed to military and commercial aircrew and passengers. The HERA program, deployed on 10 separate Air Force aircraft over a multi-year campaign, will result in thousands of observational flight hours and be the largest concerted effort to date to observe TGFs in situ through aircraft observations. In this paper, we give an overview of the scientific goals of this campaign and how the HERA instruments have been designed to meet those goals. Here, we include a detailed description of the HERA instrument, along with mass model and signal processing simulations.

Manufacturing and characterization of a boron-loaded fast-cured plastic organic scintillator

A novel fast-cured, boron-loaded, plastic organic scintillator was developed and characterized. A diisopropylnaphthalene-containing scintillator was manufactured in minutes with the addition of two commercially available fast-curing monomers, isobornyl acrylate (IBOA) and 1,6-Hexanediol dimethacrylate (HDDMA). Further, the light yield of the device was measured to be approximately 70% relative to a similarly sized, but several-year-aged, EJ-276 detector. Using a coincidence capture technique, the neutron capture light output was found to be 87.7 ± 4.2 keVee, which was 1.47 ± 0.07 greater than the light output from a 59.5 keV electron. Producing a viable fast-cured and thermal-neutron-sensitive detector enables the capability to pursue cost-effective 3D printed thermal neutron detectors in a timely manner.

Modeling ionization quenching in organic scintillators

Ionization quenching models were assessed by evaluating light yield data from multiple organic scintillators and recoil ions over a fission spectrum neutron energy range, important for basic science and applications.

Design and Characterization of an Optically Segmented Single Volume Scatter Camera Module

Here, the optically segmented single volume scatter camera (OS-SVSC) aims to image neutron sources for nuclear nonproliferation applications using the kinematic reconstruction of elastic double-scatter events. We report on the design, construction, and calibration of one module of a new prototype. The module includes 16 EJ-204 organic plastic scintillating bars individually wrapped in Teflon tape, each measuring 0.5cx0.5cmx20cm . The scintillator array is coupled to two custom silicon photomultiplier (SiPM) boards consisting of a 2x8 array of SensL J-Series-60035 SiPMs, which are read out by a custom 16 channel DRS4 based digitizer board. The electrical crosstalk between SiPMs within the electronics chain is measured as 0.76%±0.11% among all 16 channels. We report the detector response of one module including interaction position, time, and energy, using two different optical coupling materials: EJ-560 silicone rubber optical coupling pads and EJ-550 optical coupling grease. We present results in terms of the overall mean and standard deviation of the z -position reconstruction and interaction time resolutions for all 16 bars in the module. We observed the 1σz -position resolution for gamma interactions in the 0.3–0.4 MeVee range to be 2.24 cm ± 1.10 cm and 1.45 cm ± 0.19 cm for silicone optical coupling pad and optical grease, respectively. The observed 1σ interaction time resolution is 265 ps ± 29 ps and 235 ps ± 10 ps for silicone optical coupling pad and optical grease, respectively.
