An atomistic structural description of the ferrielectric polar phase involving non-coplanar cation displacements

Materials with antipolar-polar transformation are attractive for their large functional responses. However, the antipolar state remains controversial in many materials. For example, recent studies on archetypical antiferroelectric (AFE) materials indicate an incomplete compensation of antiparallel dipoles, which prompted their alternative definition as ferrielectric. Here, we investigated the origin of the ferrielectric (FIE) state in a classical AFE material using X-ray and neutron total scattering. We show that the FIE state arises from 3-dimensional modulation of the cation-centric electric dipoles, which can be viewed as periodic arrangement of 180° twin boundaries with non-Ising characteristics.

Effects of Al concentration on the structure and conductivity of lithium lanthanum zirconium oxide

Cubic Li 7-3x Al x La 3 Zr 2 O 12 (LLZO) is a promising, next-generation solid electrolyte due to its stability with Li-metal and high bulk conductivity (~1 mS cm -1 ). However, the source of the high conductivity is not completely understood. In this work, we address this key knowledge gap through the integration of elemental analysis, neutron diffraction sensitive to Li and O atoms, and impedance spectroscopy to understand the structure–property correlations for LLZO. We show the metal–oxygen framework structure remains constant with variation in Al substitution, resulting in a constant activation energy of ~0.35 eV and little effect on the bulk conductivity. Instead, Li concentration, Al blocking and trapping of mobile defects, and Li–Li nearest neighbor interactions largely control the Al substituted LLZO bulk conductivity, resulting in decreases from 0.73 to 0.22 mS cm -1 as the Al concentration increases from 0.17 to 0.32 mol. These results differ from those of Ta substituted LLZO, where the framework structure and Li–Li site distances play large roles in controlling the conductivity. The increased understanding of the controlling factors of conductivity allows for greater ability to tailor the design of and substitution into the LLZO structure for improved conductivity.

Li 2 GeS 3 : Lithium Ionic Conductor with an Unprecedented Structural Type

Lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) are widely used in electric vehicles, mobile electronic devices, and large-scale stationary energy storage systems. However, their liquid electrolytes present significant safety concerns due to their inherent flammability. To address this, the focus has shifted toward all-solid-state batteries (ASSBs) utilizing inorganic solid electrolytes that promise enhanced safety. In this work, we report the discovery of a new crystal structural type of Li-ion conductor, Li 2 GeS 3 , with a unique structure, synthesized by a solid-state reaction from Li 2 S and GeS 2 . It was first reported in 2000 with an orthorhombic unit cell, but its detailed crystal structure remains veiled. Here, we have unveiled its structure for the first time, employing an ab initio structure determination technique from powder X-ray and time-of-flight neutron diffraction data. The compound has an unprecedented crystal structural type with a hexagonal $P6_1$ symmetry and a unit cell of α = 6.79364(4) Å and c = 17.90724(14) Å. Its structure is comprised of a distorted hexagonal close-packed arrangement of sulfur anions with three asymmetric metal atoms: Li1, Li2, and Ge are in tetrahedral cavities surrounded by sulfur atoms. The ionic conductivity of Li 2 GeS 3 was measured to be 1.63 × 10 –8 S cm –1 at 303 K and 2.45 × 10 –7 S cm –1 at 383 K. Bond valence energy landscape calculations revealed three-dimensional lithium diffusion pathways within the structure. This novel crystal structure in Li 2 GeS 3 holds the potential for developing high-performance ionic conductors through suitable chemical substitution and offers valuable insights into designing new ionic conductors for ASSBs.

Scaling behavior of order parameters for the hybrid improper ferroelectric (Ca, Sr) 3 Ti 2 O 7

Here, we show that in contrast to the conventional view of a mean-field Landau-type behavior, the oxygen octahedral tilt ($\textit{R}$) and polarization (P) in the $A_3B_2\text{O}_7$ Ruddlesden-Popper hybrid improper ferroelectric (Ca,Sr) 3 Ti 2 O 7 exhibits the scaling behavior of a 2D Ising class near the para-to-ferroelectric transition temperature ($T_c$). We also show that $\textit{P}$ exhibits an additional transition from a 2D Ising to a 3D mean-field critical behavior at a temperature $T_{\text{d}} < T_{\text{c}}$, which is driven by enhanced interlayer dipolar correlations due to an increase in the ferroelectrically active $\textit{B}$-site centered dipoles.

Competing Magnetic Interactions and the Role of Unpaired 4 f Electrons in Oxygen-Deficient Perovskites Ba 3 R Fe 2 O 7.5 ( R = Y, Dy)

Oxygen-deficient perovskite compounds with the general formula Ba 3 RFe 2 O 7.5 present a good opportunity to study competing magnetic interactions between Fe 3+ 3d cations with and without the involvement of unpaired 4f electrons on R 3+ cations. From analysis of neutron powder diffraction data, complemented by ab initio density functional theory calculations, we determined the magnetic ground states when R 3+ = Y 3+ (non-magnetic) and Dy 3+ (4f 9 ). They both adopt complex long-range ordered antiferromagnetic structures below T N = 6.6 and 14.5 K, respectively, with the same magnetic space group C a 2/c (BNS #15.91). However, the dominant influence of f-electron magnetism is clear in temperature dependence and differences between the size of the ordered moments on the two crystallographically independent Fe sites, one of which is enhanced by R–O–Fe superexchange in the Dy compound, while the other is frustrated by it. We report the Dy compound also shows evidence for temperature- and field-dependent transitions with hysteresis, indicating a field-induced ferromagnetic component below TN.
