Stoichiometric metal nitration based novel green synthesis of mesoporous metal oxides and their enhanced heterogeneity

Here, in this work, a general and novel method for the green synthesis of mesoporous metal oxides via stoichiometric metal nitration has been demonstrated. Pluronic surfactants and their effect on synthesis procedures in terms of surface area have been experimentally studied in detail. Contrary to the traditional synthesis procedure, water has been utilized as the solvent and in several cases, such as tin oxide, manganese oxide, aluminum oxide, antimony oxide, zinc oxide, cobalt oxide, copper oxide, yttrium oxide, lanthanum oxide, and silver either the highest or comparable surface areas have been successfully synthesized. Through XRD, and TEM, all materials were observed to be crystalline except silver and magnesium oxide. SEM shows that with an increase in surfactant molar mass agglomeration decreases. Ammonia chemisorption on acidic materials gives quantitative amounts of ammonia chemical bonding with catalysts, whereas carbon dioxide chemisorption gives a quantitative value of CO 2 chemical binding with basic sites. As high as 1901.8 μmol/g and 994.6 μmol/g ammonia chemisorption values for oxides of vanadium and tin were achieved. Amphoteric materials give both acidic and basic enhanced adsorption. Finally, all synthesized materials are studied under organic catalytic transformations. Benzyl bromide is theoretically more active compared with benzylamine and benzyl alcohol which was also experimentally shown through the conversion.

Selenium-doped copper oxide nanoarrays: Robust electrocatalyst for the oxygen evolution reaction with ultralow overpotential

The oxygen evolution reaction (OER) is the key anodic reaction in electrochemical water splitting. OER is a four-electron process with sluggish reaction kinetics. RuO 2 and IrO 2 are the benchmark catalysts for OER. Thus, finding a low-cost, earth-abundant, and stable electrocatalyst for OER is a big challenge. Here in this work, we report OER over Se-CuO/CF nanoarrays with an ultralow overpotential of 440 mV (at 50 mA/cm 2 current density). Se-CuO/CF nanoarray has a TOF of 0.05 s -1 at 300 mV. The catalyst showed consistent OER performance upto1000 cycles run over a period of 10 h. The OER performance of Se-CuO/CF nanoarrays was compared with RuO 2 /CF catalyst and the overpotential for RuO 2 /CF nanoarray was only 10 mV lower than Se-CuO/CF 50 mA/cm 2 current density. Se-CuO/CF nanoarray showed 50 mV lower overpotential than the state of the art RuO 2 /CF catalyst at a current density of 100 mA/cm 2 . The Tafel slope of Se-CuO/CF is 21 mV/decade lower compared to RuO 2 /CF suggesting faster reaction kinetics of Se-CuO/CF. The electrochemical surface area and the conductivity were increased upon doping Se into CuO/CF nanoarrays which can be attributed to enhanced OER performance of the Se-CuO/CF nanoarrays.

A two-electron transfer mechanism of the Zn-doped δ-MnO 2 cathode toward aqueous Zn-ion batteries with ultrahigh capacity

Neutral aqueous zinc-ion batteries (ZIBs) have attracted considerable attention due to their safe and green features. As one typical cathode, birnessite MnO 2 (δ-MnO 2 ) suffers from low conductivity and structural instability, and its energy storage mechanism is still not well established yet. Herein, we developed a Zn-doped δ-MnO 2 material via a facile and effective microwave-assisted method for the cathode in aqueous ZIBs. By incorporating Zn to modify the microstructure and promote reaction kinetics, the Zn-doped δ-MnO 2 electrode demonstrates significantly enhanced electrochemical performance with an ultrahigh reversible capacity of 455 mA h g –1 and excellent specific energy of 628 W h kg –1 . In addition, the successive insertion of H + and Zn 2+ and deep two-electron transfer routes are revealed systematically by ex situ experiments. In this study, the two-electron transfer route (Mn 4+ /Mn 3+ and Mn 3+ /Mn 2+ ) mechanism of Zn-doped δ-MnO 2 electrodes explains the exceedingly high capacity and opens new opportunities to develop high-energy aqueous ZIBs.

Partial oxidation of isobutylene using Ni TiO x

In this work, we report an aerobic partical oxidation of isobutylene into isoprene, acetone, and p-xylene using a mesoporous Ni TiO x catalytic material. In this work, two catalysts were found to synthesize two of these three valuable products with high selectivity, with p-xylene being synthesized with a selectivity of 46.0% and isoprene being synthesized with a selectivity of 64.7%, with overall conversions of isobutylene being 34.0% and 11.9% respectively. These reactions were done at relatively low temperatures. (300°C or below) and are conducted at flow rates of 10 sccm oxygen and isobutylene. The nickel titania catalysts were studied extensively using various characterization methodologies such as TEM, Raman, XRD, and XRF.

Enhanced visible-light-assisted peroxymonosulfate activation on cobalt-doped mesoporous iron oxide for orange II degradation

Sulfate radical-based advanced oxidation processes (SR-AOP) attracted a lot of attention due to their capability and adaptability in wastewater treatment. Although heterogeneous cobalt-based catalysts have been extensively studied and have emerged superior for peroxymonosulfate (PMS) activation, leaching of cobalt is still a major concern. Herein, we report a photo-assisted PMS activation approach using cobalt doped mesoporous iron oxide with exceptional activity and stability up to 7 cycles with very low cobalt leaching (0.5 ppm). The highest activity was obtained by 1 mol % cobalt doped mesoporous iron oxide. Orange II dye was completely degraded by the reactive oxygen species (ROS) generated under visible light irradiation within 1 min. ROS were evaluated using two distinct techniques (Fluorescence probes and Electron Paramagnetic Resonance (EPR). ROS quenching experiments were also used to highlight the dominant pathway. This study correlates the structural and electronic changes induced with cobalt doping to the exceptional activity.
