Standard Fastener Library

Program for use with graphics system creates library of standard fastener hardware. Programs categorized by fastener geometric shape with tabulated sizes. Fastener details recalled by configuration and size for insertion into drawing on screen. Program used in production of engineering drawings for Space Shuttle orbiter.

Universal Assembly for Captive Bolts

New method allows for virtually any bolt to be easily converted to "captive" bolt. Method eliminates need for separate design for each application. Cup-shaped washer that is flattened secures tap to bolt. Wire attached to tab holds bolt assembly captive. Flattening washer can also be done during installation of bolt. Wash, tab and spacer are all made of corrosion-resistant steel.

High-Temperature Captive Nut Assembly

High-temperature captive-nut assembly consists of removable nut element that snaps into loose-fitting recesses in shell. Replacement of nut element is easily accomplished with simple handtools. Old nut is pried out and new one pushed into position. Removal is easily accomplished with help of U-shaped tool.

Fastener for thermal insulation blankets

Serrated-stem fastener, similar to those that hold wire harnesses, has been adapted to attach blankets to supporting structures. Easy installation and removal implemented.

Large-diameter fasteners of CRES alloy

Double-hex bolthead allows bolts of high strength corrosion-resistant steel (CRES) to be made in diameters up to 1-1/4 in. Design allows 12-point tension heads to be cold formed to retain required minimum tensile strength of 220,000 psi and to retain high fracture strength.
