Method for Coupled Electromagnetic and Circuit Simulations to Evaluate Surge Arrester Performance in Protecting Equipment Against E1 HEMP

Surge arrester behavioral modeling for realistic systems embedded in an E1 high-altitude electromagnetic pulse environment inherently encompasses three interconnected complications: (1) the need to account for signal propagation across two domains, electromagnetics and electrical; (2) the need to include both linear and nonlinear circuit components in the analysis; and (3) the need to understand that the over-current and over-voltage mitigation performance is dependent not only on the properties of the surge arrester and protected load but also on the topology of the overall electrical network. This study presents a framework to address these challenges in a systematic manner to consider the effectiveness of protective measures for a common class of equipment in power generation facilities. Full-wave simulations were carried out to derive circuit-domain (i.e., lumped element–based) equivalent models for the excitation waveform and the physical components of the system. Then, these equivalent models were imported to a circuit solver and combined with a high-frequency surge arrester model to evaluate mitigation performance. The methodology outlined is general enough such that it can be applied for other electromagnetic interference problems that involve E2/E3 HEMP or microwave emissions.

Effects on Structure’s Electromagnetic Shielding Effectiveness Considering Penetrating Cables Coupling Energy from HEMP Event

The threat of weaponized electromagnetic pulse (EMP) is a serious factor in defining power system resilience. Without adequate knowledge regarding the interaction between EMP and power system infrastructure, system personnel may be unable to plan for and operate during an EMP event and major blackouts could occur. This work studies the interaction between EMP and structures, specifically analyzing the shielding effectiveness of buildings emulating power generation facilities. The main focus is to determine how penetrating cables affect the structure’s shielding effectiveness. Several cable parameters including height above ground, radius, termination configuration, and length are analyzed via computational electromagnetic simulations. Results demonstrated penetrating cables can significantly diminish a structure’s shielding effectiveness, especially the electric field. Length of cable is the most influential parameter.

Vulnerability Studies Under EMP: Impedance and PCI Testing of the Grid Control Devices

Control devices such as inverters and generator controllers are critical for the stable operation of the power grid, especially for power stability control and power dispatch. However, the Electromagnetic Pulse (EMP) is a potential threat to electronic devices in modern power grids, therefore decreasing the power grid resilience and bringing unrecoverable damages to the devices. To reveal the impact mechanism of the EMP, impedance and Pulse Current Injection (PCI) testing is established to study the vulnerability of the grid control devices. The impedance of the grid control devices is accurately measured using impedance analyzers with different frequency ranges. Then the voltage and current responses are tested based on the PCI testing. The vulnerability experiments based on two grid control devices are carried out. And the comparison results reveal that most ports would be damaged under EC8, and some ports can survive under EC5 according to the calculated PCI response and cumulative energy. The results can provide a reference for the future design of control devices and the strategic resilience of power grids.

Estimation of High-Altitude Electromagnetic Pulse Signal Leakage into Power Generation Facilities: Simulations and Measurements

The coupling of early-time high-altitude electromagnetic pulse signals into a power generation facility was investigated. This study encompasses both electromagnetic simulation and on-site experimental efforts that are relevant to shielding effectiveness estimation with a passive technique. As an initial step in understanding the attenuation models involved, simulations were carried out as a function of frequency, building properties, and signal incidence angle. Testing was then performed at the US Department of Energy’s Oak Ridge National Laboratory campus to identify the equipment needed for signal collection and to fine-tune the experimental procedure. Finally, as an application of the models and methods presented, measurements were conducted at a power generation plant to derive the field transfer functions and coupled high-altitude electromagnetic pulse waveforms for various locations within the facility.

Immunity Study: Port Impedance Measurement of PMU and PCI testing under EMP

Phasor Measurement Units (PMUs) are critical for the Wide Area Measurement System (WAMS), especially for real-time grid monitoring, disturbance location, and situation awareness. Once they are damaged, the stable operation of the power system will be affected directly and greatly. Therefore, it is urgent and necessary to study their immunity to electromagnetic pulse (EMP) events. In this paper, an effective impedance measurement scheme is proposed for port impedance measurement of PMU. The equivalent non-uniform transmission line model is established to eliminate the impact of the fixture in the de-embedding process. Then circuit of pulsed current generator is established to generate damping sinusoid and double exponential wave applied to the port. Finally, by using measured impedance as a load of the generator, the voltage and current responses of different ports are calculated in the pulsed current injection (PCI) testing simulation. Results show that common-mode impedance is large and differential mode impedance is small. The critical condition will appear in the common mode for voltage and differential mode for current.

Voltage and Current Response Characteristics of PMU Device by PCI Simulation

Phasor Measurement Units (PMUs) are critical for the Wide Area Measurement System (WAMS), especially for real-time grid monitoring, disturbance location, and situation awareness. Once they are damaged, the stable operation of power system will be affected directly and greatly. As new electronic devices in power system, their immunity to electromagnetic pulse (EMP) events needs to be studied. In this paper, an effective impedance measurement scheme is proposed for port impedance measurement of PMU. A non-uniform transmission line model is established to eliminate the impact of fixture in the de-embedding process. Then circuit of pulse current generator is established to generate damping sinusoid and double exponential wave applied to the port. Finally, by using measured impedance as load of the generator, the voltage and current responses of different ports are calculated in the pulsed current injection (PCI) simulation. Results shows the characteristics of port impedance, voltage and current waveforms. The relation between port impedance and the waveforms is discussed.

PLC-based Impedance Measurement and Current Injection Response Analysis

Studying and mitigating the vulnerabilities of Programmable Logic Controllers (PLCs) to electromagnetic pulse is important for the reliability of the power system. In this paper, an effective impedance measurement scheme is proposed to estimate the susceptibility of PLCs to an electromagnetic pulse. The equivalent non-uniform transmission line model is established to eliminate the impact of the fixture in the de-embedding process. Based on the measured impedance, the equivalent circuit is established to calculate the response of the device when subjected to the electromagnetic pulse. The voltage and current responses of different interfaces are compared utilizing the developed pulse Current Injection (CI) method. Finally, the impedance measurement scheme is verified through testing using three measuring instruments. And the CI simulation experiments reveal the characteristics and susceptibilities of different PLCs interfaces, indicating that some protection measures are required for the reliable operation of PLC.
