The heavy ion composition in 3HE-rich solar flares

The 3He-rich flares show a tendency to be enriched in heavy ions, and that this enrichment covers the charge range through Fe. The discovery of this association was responsible, in part, for the discarding of 3He enrichment models which involved spallation or thermonuclear reactions, since such models were unable to produce heavy nuclei enhancement. Results of a survey of heavy nucleus abundances observed in 66 3He-rich flares which occurred over the period October 1978 to June 1982 are presented.

Constraints of solar flare particle transport models from anisotropy observations at Voyager 1

In general a particle transport model for energetic solar flare particles contains a number of free parameters which are determined by fitting various features of observed particle events. Frequently the parameter values are not uniquely determined. In order to place tighter constraints on the models, the anisotropy of 1 and 25 MeV/nuc protons and helium nuclei were examined during the 22 November 1977 solar particle event using data from the LECP experiment on Voyager 1 at 1.6 AU. These observations were combined with the time intensity profiles at Voyager 1 and at 1 AU from ISEE-1 and IMP-8 to determine the magnitude and radial dependence of the interplanetary diffusion coefficient and the required injection duration at the sun. The first order anisotropy amplitudes for both 1 MeV and 25 MeV protons are observed to decrease from maximum values (approx. 1) during the event onset at Voyager 1 to values consistent with convection in the solar wind at about 3 days into the event decay phase. The intensity and anisotropy profiles at 1.6 AU are consistent with predictions of diffusive transport with a modest mean free path (lambda = approx. 0.1 AU).

Radial transport of approximately 1 MeV/nucleon ions during the 22 November 1977 solar particle event

Time intensity profiles of solar flare energetic particle events carry information on the particle injection processes at the Sun, as well as the transport of particles in interplanetary space. However, in order to help identify the individual processes of injection versus transport it is necessary to use observations taken at more than one radial location. Results of such a study concerning the 22 November 1977 solar particle event, observed with instruments at 1.0 and 1.55 AU are presented. The observations are for particles of energies near 1 MeV/nucleon, considerably less than the approx. 10 to 20 MeV/nucleon energies typical of previous radial transport studies. Thus, in the present work it is possible to examine the validity of transport models to considerably lower energies than in previous work.

Temporal variations of the anomalous oxygen component, 1977 - 1984

A survey is of the long term temporal variations of 6.6 to 12 MeV/nucleon anomalous oxygen at 1 AU covering the period 1977 to 1984. This time interval included the recent solar maximum, with the recovery at neutron monitor energies beginning in 1982. During this time interval, 6.6 to 12 MeV/nucleon 0 fluxes decreased by at least a factor of 50, and indeed remained below the instrumental detection threshold after 1979. By late 1984, neutron monitors had recovered to roughly 1979 levels from the 1982 solar maximum, and anomalous O still remained below the detection threshold.

The ISEE-1 ULEWAT flux tape description

The ISEE-1 ULEWAT FLUX tapes of solar proton observations summarized over 1hr intervals are described. Three years of data fit onto one 1600 BPI 9-track magnetic tape. In making the tapes, corrections were made to the ULEWAT basic data tapes in order to, e.g., remove rate spikes and account for changes in instrument response, so that instrument fluxes can be calculated easily from the FLUX tapes without further consideration of instrument performance. Limitations and warnings about the use of the tapes are included.

Temporal variations of nucleonic abundances in solar flare energetic particle events. II - Evidence for large-scale shock acceleration

A survey of the roughly 1 MeV per nucleon ion abundance over the range H-Fe measured with 3 hr time resolution during large solar particle events from November 1973 through December 1977, under near solar minimum conditions, is presented. For all the monitored species, a strong decrease in average flux level occurred with increase of the optical flare site distance from the W 60 deg connection point. The 3 hr abundance ratios He/H, O/He, and Fe/He were observed to fluctuate by a factor of about two about their average values for given flare events, and the size of these fluctuations was independent of the distance to the optical flare site. The monitored abundance ratios exhibited no dependence on distance to the optical flare site. The physical mechanism suggested to explain these observations is large-scale shock acceleration from a shock wave originating at the flare site and propagating as far away as 100 deg heliolongitude.

Transient upset models in computer systems

Essential factors for the design of transient upset monitors for computers are discussed. The upset is a system level event that is software dependent. It can occur in the program flow, the opcode set, the opcode address domain, the read address domain, and the write address domain. Most upsets are in the program flow. It is shown that simple, external monitors functioning transparently relative to the system operations can be built if a detailed accounting is made of the characteristics of the faults that can happen. Sample applications are provided for different states of the Z-80 and 8085 based system.

Time and energy dependence of heavy ion abundances in solar flare energetic particle events

Examples are presented of the time and energy dependence of the abundances and spectra of the major heavy ions He, C, O and Fe during solar flare events, taken from a survey using the UMD/MPI ULET telescope on IMP-8 during 1973-1977. In some cases, time variations were found in the O/He, O/C and Fe/O ratios which appear to be inconsistent with models based solely on rigidity dependent propagation in the interplanetary medium.

A Supra-Thermal Energetic Particle detector (STEP) for composition measurements in the range approximately 20 keV/nucleon to 1 MeV/nucleon

A detector system is described, employing a time-of-flight versus residual energy technique which allows measurement of particle composition (H-Fe), energy spectral and anisotropies in an energy range unaccessible with previously flown sensors. Applications of this method to measurements of the solar wind ion composition are discussed.

Data from a survey of solar flare events undertaken by the UMD/MPI ULET telescope on the IMP-8 satellite during the period 1973-1977 yields examples of time and energy dependence of the abundances and spectra of the He, C, O and Fe heavy ions. Time variations are found in the O/He, O/C and Fe/O ratios which appear to be inconsistent with models based entirely on rigidity-dependent propagation in the interplanetary medium. It is speculated that such other factors as the abundance differences at the flare site on the sun, or features of the acceleration and release mechanisms, may play an important role in the variations discussed.

A survey of approximately 1 MeV/nucleon solar flare particle abundances, in the Z ? 1-26 range, during the 1973-1977 solar minimum period

The abundances of the major elements over the range H-Fe in solar flare energetic particles near 1 MeV/nucleon were surveyed for a large number of flares during the period 1973-1977; observations were carried out by the IMP 8 spacecraft in interplanetary space. The survey considered two types of solar flare events: (1) large events from which the average boundaries were deduced, and (2) events which have significant abundance differences from average. In addition, two He-3-rich events with abundance features that are different from previous examples are reported: one case with no enhancements of heavy ions, and a second case in which, compared to O, the heavy-ion enhancements are confined to the charge range Si-Fe rather than the usual case in which all elements Ne-Fe are enriched.

Search for characteristic features of low-energy quiet-time H, He and heavy nuclei fluxes, 1973-1977

Results of a survey of the 0.5-10 MeV/nucleon fluxes of H, He and heavier ions during interplanetary 'quiet-times' over the period 1973-1977 using the ULET telescope on IMP-8 are reported. It is found that in this energy range no characteristic flux level, or, e.g., proton/alpha ratio emerges during quiet periods in any year, thus precluding systematic long-term studies of the time behavior of the quiet-time component at these energies. Spectra for a uniquely quiet period in May 1977 and a less restrictively chosen set of quiet periods in 1976-1977 are presented and compared with previous results.

Heavy ion composition in solar flares at low energies, 1973-1977

The composition of solar flare particles near 1 MeV/nucleon has been surveyed for the major species between H and Fe over a four-year period using the IMP-8 ULET instrument. The average composition for the larger flares is found to be remarkably similar to that found by previous studies at energies greater than 10 MeV/nucleon. Variations in abundance are found to be well ordered by atomic number. It is suggested that such a smooth variation in abundances is due to an acceleration mechanism which preserves the main features of the ambient composition of the accelerated material, at least in the larger flares.

Composition anomalies in solar flares

Flares with anomalies in He-3 and Fe enrichment and unusual abundances of heavy ions are discussed. Enrichment in heavy elements including O, Ne, Mg, Si, S-Ca group, and Fe is found in small flares enriched in He-3 and Fe; the flares enriched in He-3 and all heavy elements through Fe show depletion of the carbon abundance. An extreme case of the carbon abundance depletion with the C/O ratio of 0.01 contrasting with the normal solar flare C/O ratio of 0.5 indicates new constraints on acceleration models for small Fe-rich events.

Distribution function representation of energy spectra of H, He, C, O and Fe in corotating particle streams

From an analysis of nine corotating events observed near 1 AU during the 1974-1976 solar minimum, the spectral parameters for H, He, C, O and Fe and relative abundances of these elements and of Ne, Mg, Si, and S-Ca were determined. The distribution functions of H, He, O and Fe are well represented by an exponential in particle speed over the energy range of the measurements from 0.3 to 5 MeV/nucleon. The composition resembles that of the solar corona, particularly in the O/C ratio which is 0.95 + or - 0.19, and the He/H and He/Ne ratios are similar to the respective ratios in the solar wind. The results are consistent with interplanetary statistical acceleration of these particles out of the high-energy tail of the high-speed solar wind.
