A New Inelastic Neutron Spectrometer HODACA

In this study, a new multiplex-type inelastic neutron scattering spectrometer, HOrizontally Defocusing Analyzer Concurrent data Acquisition spectrometer (HODACA), was recently developed and built at the C1-1 cold neutron beam port in the neutron source reactor JRR-3 at Japan Atomic Energy Agency. The spectrometer is suitable for dynamics measurements in the energy range of -1 meV ≲ ℏω ≲ 7 meV, catering to a broad array of research fields in physics and material science. HODACA combines 24 detectors and 132 pieces of analyzer crystals and has an estimated measurement efficiency that is 70 times greater than the existing conventional triple-axis spectrometer at the C1-1 beam port. The concept, design, specification, and results of commissioning experiments are described.

Field control of quasiparticle decay in a quantum antiferromagnet

Dynamics in a quantum material is described by quantized collective motion: a quasiparticle. The single-quasiparticle description is useful for a basic understanding of the system, whereas a phenomenon beyond the simple description such as quasiparticle decay which affects the current carried by the quasiparticle is an intriguing topic. The instability of the quasiparticle is phenomenologically determined by the magnitude of the repulsive interaction between a single quasiparticle and the two-quasiparticle continuum. Although the phenomenon has been studied in several materials, thermodynamic tuning of the quasiparticle decay in a single material has not yet been investigated. Here we show, by using neutron scattering, magnetic field control of the magnon decay in a quantum antiferromagnet RbFeCl 3 , where the interaction between the magnon and continuum is tuned by the field. At low fields where the interaction is small, the single magnon decay process is observed. In contrast, at high fields where the interaction exceeds a critical magnitude, the magnon is pushed downwards in energy and its lifetime increases. Our study demonstrates that field control of quasiparticle decay is possible in the system where the two-quasiparticle continuum covers wide momentum-energy space, and the phenomenon of the magnon avoiding decay is ubiquitous.

Inelastic Neutron Scattering Data for FeSn

Inelastic neutron scattering data from FeSn collected with the SEQUOIA spectrometer at the Spallation Neutron Source located at Oak Ridge National Laboratory. A 4.43 g sample of FeSn was used for the measurements as described in doi: https://doi.org/10.1103/PhysRevB.105.L180403 and the associated supplemental information. The data were collected with an incident energy of 500 meV. The Fermi chopper frequency was 480 Hz, which provides a resolution of 38.2 meV (FWHM) for elastic scattering. Additional details are available in https://doi.org/10.1103/PhysRevB.105.L180403 and the associated supplemental information. The data may be viewed and analyzed with the software packages Mantid (http://dx.doi.org/10.5286/SOFTWARE/MANTID) and Dave (doi: 10.6028/jres.114.025). Sample angles measured: -20 deg to 20 deg and 160 deg to 200 deg where 0 deg is defined for ki//c* Sample Orientation vectors: ‘u': '-0.0032, 0.0201, -1.0' ‘v': '-1.0, 0.0278, -0.0059'

Damped Dirac magnon in the metallic kagome antiferromagnet FeSn

The kagome lattice is a fertile platform to explore topological excitations with both Fermi-Dirac and Bose-Einstein statistics. While relativistic Dirac fermions and flat bands have been discovered in the electronic structure of kagome metals, the spin excitations have received less attention. Here, we report inelastic neutron scattering studies of the prototypical kagome magnetic metal FeSn. The spectra display well-defined spin waves extending to 120 meV. Above this energy, the spin waves become progressively broadened, reflecting interactions with the Stoner continuum. Using linear spin-wave theory, we determine an effective spin Hamiltonian that reproduces the measured dispersion. This analysis indicates that the Dirac magnon at the K point remarkably occurs on the brink of a region where well-defined spin waves become unobservable. Furthermore, our results emphasize the influential role of itinerant carriers on the topological spin excitations of metallic kagome magnets.

Oval-cycloidal Magnetic Structure with Phase-shift in the Non-centrosymmetric Tetragonal Compound CePdSi 3

CePdSi 3 with H // [100] exhibits multiple metamagnetic transitions. Since there is no frustration in this system, it is suggested that the origin of the multiple metamagnetic transitions is the influence of the antisymmetric spin–orbit interaction. To clarify the magnetic structure under the influence of the antisymmetric spin–orbit interaction, neutron diffraction experiments have been performed using single crystal samples of CePdSi3. There are observed magnetic reflections with incommensurate magnetic propagation vector q=(0.315,0,0) in the phase I. In addition, additional magnetic reflections were also observed in the phase III. The magnetic structure was found to be an oval-cycloidal structure at the phase III in CePdSi 3 , and we discuss the origin of the unusual magnetic structure.

Coexistence of Magnetoelectric and Antiferroelectric-like Orders in Mn 3 Ta 2 O 8

We report in materials showing a linear magnetoelectric (ME) effect, unconventional functionalities can be anticipated such as electric control of magnetism and nonreciprocal optical responses. Thus, the search for new linear ME materials is of interest in materials science. In this study, using a recently proposed design principle of linear ME materials, which is based on the combination of local structural asymmetry and collinear antiferromagnetism, we demonstrate that an anion-deficient fluorite derivative, Mn 3 Ta 2 O 8 , is a new linear ME material. This is evidenced by the onset of magnetic-field-induced electric polarization in its collinear antiferromagnetic phase below T N = 24 K. Furthermore, we also find an antiferroelectric-like phase transition at T S = 55 K, which is attributable to an off-center displacement of magnetic Mn 2+ ions. The present study shows that Mn 3 Ta 2 O 8 is a rare material that exhibits both ME and antiferroelectric-like transitions. Thus, Mn 3 Ta 2 O 8 may provide an opportunity to investigate the physics associated with complicated interactions between magnetic (spin) and electric dipole degrees of freedom.

Magnetic Diffuse Scattering of YBaCo 4 O 7 and LuBaCo 4 O 7 on Kagome and Triangular Lattices

In this work, the magnetic diffuse scattering of YBaCo 4 O 7 and LuBaCo 4 O 7 with alternating kagome and triangular lattices has been studied through neutron scattering measurements on single-crystal samples. In YBaCo 4 O 7 , the line-shape-magnetic-diffuse scattering is observed around the magnetic transition temperature, which is consistent with the Monte Carlo simulation. In LuBaCo 4 O 7 , the line-shape-magnetic-diffuse scattering has not been detected. At low temperature, the propagation vectors of the observed magnetic reflections are different between YBaCo 4 O 7 and LuBaCo 4 O 7 . The structural distortion in RBaCo 4 O 7 is suggested to play a critical role for the magnetic properties.
