A Summary of the Status of the EOS Terra Mission Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) and Attendant Data Product Development After One Year of On-Orbit Performance

The Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) is well. The signal-to-noise (S/N) performance meets or exceeds specifications, band-to-band registration meets specifications, and geodetic registration of observations is near or at 50 meters (one sigma). Some problems with electronic noise, optical leaks, etc. have been identified and solutions to compensate or eliminate these effects have been successful. All approximately 40 data products are at 'Beta' status. Additional information is contained in the original extended abstract.

Lithologic mapping in a forested region using remotely sensed data

Forest canopies over different sedimentary lithologies of valleys and ridges are composed of different dominant species and have significantly different reflectance and emittance. In a botanical survey of eighty-seven forest sites, sedimentary lithologies were found to differ in the species which dominate the forest canopy. Sandstone sites had abundant chestnut oak (Quercus prinus), black oak (Q. velutina), and northern red oak (Q. rubra). On shale sites chestnut oak, white oak (Q. alba), northern red oak and red pine (Pinus resinosa) were dominant. Limestone sites had a variable species composition with the most common species, northern red oak, white oak, and black locust (Robinia pseudocacia) accounting for only 30 percent of the total trees. Thematic Mapper Simulator (TMS) data obtained during the growing season were analyzed to determine if sandstones, shales, and limestones could be distinguished on the basis of forest-canopy reflectance. The observations compared in the analysis were means of the eight TMS bands for 10 x 10-pixel test sites selected from areas with complete canopy closure. In August imagery the three lithologies were separable based on differences in TMS band 3 (630-690 nm) and band 8 (10.4-12.5 microns).

A Preliminary Investigation of Systematic Noise in Data Acquired with the Airborne Imaging Spectrometer

Systematic noise is present in Airborne Imaging Spectrometer (AIS) data collected on October 26, 1983 and May 5, 1984 in grating position 0 (1.2 to 1.5 microns). In the October data set the noise occurs as 135 scan lines of low DN's every 270 scan lines. The noise is particularly bad in bands nine through thirty, restricting effective analysis to at best ten of the 32 bands. In the May data the regions of severe noise have been eliminated, but systematic noise is present with three frequencies (3, 106 and 200 scan lines) in all thirty two bands. The periodic nature of the noise in both data sets suggests that it could be removed as part of routine processing. This is necessary before classification routines or statistical analyses are used with these data.

APPLEPIPS /Apple Personal Image Processing System/ - An interactive digital image processing system for the Apple II microcomputer

Recent developments related to microprocessor-based personal computers have made low-cost digital image processing systems a reality. Image analysis systems built around these microcomputers provide color image displays for images as large as 256 by 240 pixels in sixteen colors. Descriptive statistics can be computed for portions of an image, and supervised image classification can be obtained. The systems support Basic, Fortran, Pascal, and assembler language. A description is provided of a system which is representative of the new microprocessor-based image processing systems currently on the market. While small systems may never be truly independent of larger mainframes, because they lack 9-track tape drives, the independent processing power of the microcomputers will help alleviate some of the turn-around time problems associated with image analysis and display on the larger multiuser systems.

Interfaces between statistical analysis packages and the ESRI geographic information system

Interfaces between ESRI's geographic information system (GIS) data files and real valued data files written to facilitate statistical analysis and display of spatially referenced multivariable data are described. An example of data analysis which utilized the GIS and the statistical analysis system is presented to illustrate the utility of combining the analytic capability of a statistical package with the data management and display features of the GIS.
