Impacts of Experimentally Obtained Harmonic Spectrums of Residential Appliances on Distribution Feeder: Preprint

This paper focuses on the harmonic load flow study for a set of residential loads and the impacts of the harmonic contents on the distribution feeder. Owing to the increased use of the power electronic based appliances and energy efficient home equipment like the lighting loads, the percentage of non-linear loads has increased in the distribution system which can impact the system performance, loss, and stability. Thus a comprehensive knowledge of their power quality and harmonic analysis is essential to improve the load models, voltage stability assessment, determining possible interactions at harmonic frequencies, protection planning, and the effect of the system impedance. For this study, the household appliances include the lighting, power electronics, resistive, and motor loads with a nominal supply voltage of 120 V single-phase or 240 V split-phase at a nominal frequency of 60 Hz. The harmonic spectrum as obtained from the experimental data is used to solve the harmonic load flow for a detailed secondary network including the distribution transformer extracted from a real distribution feeder's model. Additionally, the impact of the voltage harmonic on a three phase test load is presented through experimental results. The harmonic data of the transformer terminal voltage as obtained from the former load flow study is scaled to generate the source voltage for the three phase configuration of the grid simulator to make the test setup very similar to a real scenario.

Modeling Needs for Power Semiconductor Devices and Power Electronics Systems: Preprint

As energy systems move towards wide-spread electrification, penetration of power semiconductor devices and power electronics continues to grow at a rapid pace. This paper attempts to review the state of the art in power semiconductor modeling and the existing state of modeling in general when in it comes to design of devices and systems. The modeling needs for semiconductor devices vary depending on the end goal, and the level of abstraction needed towards model formulation also changes with the size and complexity of system to be designed. Finally, key aspects of thermal design and modeling for power electronics are also discussed.

Evolution of Distributed Energy Resource Grid Interconnection Standards for Integrating Emerging Storage Technologies

Grid interconnection standards facilitate safe and reliable grid integration of distributed energy resources (DERs). Evolution of a standard for DERs is expected to capture and accommodate widely different characteristics of DER and minimize unique grid integration challenges. This makes development of a uniform grid interconnection standard for all types of DERs a challenging and an ever-evolving consideration. This paper presents a detailed timeline of evolution, from the early 2000s to 2018, of DER interconnection standards and the research that informed their development. This is followed by a review of the research topics being considered in the grid integration of Energy Storage Systems (ESSs) which are expected to have the most significant growth amongst all DER types. These help in highlighting the need for a new standard to accommodate the unique characteristics of ESSs, and where the existing DER interconnection standard frameworks may be leveraged.

Electricity Produced from Photovoltaic Systems in Apartment Buildings and Self-Consumption: Comparison of the Situation in Various IEA PVPS Countries

Over the last two decades, grid-connected solar photovoltaic systems have increased from a niche market to one of the leading power generation capacity additions annually. In 2018 the total installed photovoltaic electricity generation capacity exceeded 500 GW. Another doubling is forecasted until the early 2020s. Therefore, the further development is coupled with the question at what prices solar photovoltaic electricity can be provided and delivered to the customers. The installation of PV systems for self-consumption is already now an interesting option for many people but in general limited to those who have access to a rooftop they own or can use. A new envelopment to enable residents of multi apartment buildings to commonly use electricity generated by a PV system (collective self-consumption) is a relatively new development and is still facing a lot of administrative and regulatory challenges.

Data-Driven Load Diversity and Variability Modeling for Quasi-Static Time-Series Simulation on Distribution Feeders

This paper presents a data-driven load modeling methodology for distribution system quasi-static time-series (QSTS) simulation considering both diversity and variability characteristics of distribution loads. Based on our previous work in [1]-[2], a variability library and diversity library have been established based on the realistic high-resolution data collected from actual utility feeders. Given the load profile for the start-of-circuit load of a feeder, the loads on the feeder nodes can be modeled with both diversity and variability instead of being directly scaled from the substation load profile according to the distribution allocation factors. With diversified load models, the load-induced impact on the feeder operation characteristics, such as voltage ramp and regulator operations, can be better considered in QSTS simulation. The proposed modeling methodology has been tested on both the IEEE 123-bus feeder and an actual utility feeder model, and the simulation results have demonstrated the merits of deploying the proposed load modeling methodology.
