Mars Sample Return - studies for a fresh look

Included in the paper are both the themes resulting from the industry studies and the general scope of the focused concepts used to assess the current planning for the Mars Sample Return (MSR) mission and precursor missions. Included in this conference are papers by the four industrial teams, as well as a fifth study by JPL's Team-X to provide further corroboration of study results. The results suggest that a scientifically justifiable mission is possible, and that technology and precursor mission demonstration plans currently in the Mars Program are justified (with some modifications).

Mars Scouts: an overview

This presentation give an overview of a proposed series of Mars Scouts Missions.

Mars Scout Missions

Mars scouts: an overview

The Mars program institutes the Mars Scout Missions in order to address science goals in the program not otherwise covered in the baseline Mars plan. Mars Scout Missions will be Principle-Investigator (PI) led science missions. Analogous to the Discovery Program, PI led investigations optimize the use of limited resources to accomplish the best focused science and allow the flexibility to quickly respond to discoveries at Mars. Scout missions also require unique investments in technology and reliance upon Mars-based infrastructure such as telecom relay orbiters.

Low Cost Planetary Exploration Via Micromissions

Planetary exploration budgets and schedules continued to push the limits of affordability and feasibility. Micromissions are a way to revolutionize planetary exploration. This paper examines the factors and technologies that make this revolution possible.

Mars Micromissions

A Mars micromission launches as an Ariane 5 secondary as early as November 1, 2002. One possible mission is a comm/nav micromission orbiter. The other possible mission is a Mars airplane. Both missions are enabled by a low-cost, common micromission bus design.
