Tunable resonator-based devices for producing variable delays and narrow spectral linewidths

Devices with two or more coupled resonators to produce narrow spectral responses due to interference of signals that transmit through the resonators and techniques for operating such devices to achieve certain operating characteristics are described. The devices may be optical devices where optical resonators such as whispering gallery mode resonators may be used. In one implementation, at least one of the coupled optical resonators is a tunable resonator and is tuned to change its resonance frequency to tune the spectral response of the device. The described devices and techniques may be applied in optical filters, optical delays, optical waveform generators, and other applications.

Optical Vortices with Large Orbital Momentum: Generation and Interference

We demonstrate a method for generation of beams of light with large angular momenta. The method utilizes whispering gallery mode resonators that transform a plane electromagnetic wave into high order Bessel beams. Interference pattern among the beams as well as shadow pictures induced by the beams are observed and studied.

Magnetometer Based on the Opto-Electronic Oscillator

We theoretically propose and discuss properties of two schemes of an all-optical self-oscillating magnetometer based on an opto-electronic oscillator stabilized with an atomic vapor cell. Proof of the principle DC magnetic field measurements characterized with 2 x 10(exp -7) G sensitivity and 1 - 1000 mG dynamic range in one of the schemes are demonstrated.

Nonlinear optical whispering gallery mode resonators

Whispering gallery mode (WGM) optical resonators comprising nonlinear optical materials, where the nonlinear optical material of a WGM resonator includes a plurality of sectors within the optical resonator and nonlinear coefficients of two adjacent sectors are oppositely poled.

Graded-index whispering gallery mode resonators

Whispering gallery mode optical resonators which have spatially-graded refractive indices. In one implementation, the refractive index spatially increases with a distance from an exterior surface of such a resonator towards an interior of the resonator to produce substantially equal spectral separations for different whispering gallery modes. An optical coupler may be used with such a resonator to provide proper optical coupling.

High-Order Tunable Filters Based on a Chain of Coupled Crystalline Whispering Gallery-Mode Resonators

We demonstrate experimentally a tunable third-order optical filter fabricated from the three voltage-controlled lithium niobate whispering gallery-mode resonators. The filter operates at 1550 nm with 30-MHz bandwidth and can be electrooptically tuned by 12 GHz in the linear regime with approximately 80-MHz/V tuning rate. With this filter, we have demonstrated 6-dB fiber-to-fiber insertion loss and 30-ns tuning speed, limited by the resonator buildup time.

All-optical Photonic Oscillator with High-Q Whispering Gallery Mode Resonators

We demonstrated low threshold optical photonic hyper-parametric oscillator in a high-Q 10(exp 10) CaF2 whispering gallery mode resonator which generates stable 8.5 GHz signal. The oscillations result from the resonantly enhanced four wave mixing occurring due to Kerr nonlinearity of the material.

Opto-Electronic Oscillator Stabilized By A Hyperfine Atomic Transition

Opto-electronic oscillator (OEO) is a closed-loop system with part of the loop is implemented by an optical beam, and the rest by RF circuitry. The technological advantage of this approach over traditional all-RF loops in the gigahertz range comes from the that frequency filtering can be done far more efficiently in the optical range with compact, low power, and have superior stability. In this work, we report our preliminary results on using the phenomenon of coherent population trapping in (87) Rb vapor as an optical filter. Such a filter allows us to stabilize the OEO at the hyperfine splitting frequency of rubidium, thus implementing a novel type of frequency standard.

Limitation on two-photon temporal correlation

We show theoretically that two-photon correlation time for a biphoton, a pair of entangled photons generated in the process of parametric down conversion, is limited by the inverse frequency width of the single-photon spectrum, which is limited by the dispersion of the nonlinear material used for the pair generation. The dispersion is determined by the transparency window of the material, which provides the ultimate limitation for the twophoton correlation time. We discuss several experimental approaches enabling realization of such a limiting case.

Nonlinear optics and crystalline whispering gallery mode resonators

We report on our recent results concerning fabrication of high-Q whispering gallery mode (WGM) crystalline resonators, and discuss some possible applications of lithium niobate WGM resonators in nonlinear optics and photonics. In particular, we demonstrate experimentally a tunable third-order optical filter fabricated from the three metalized resonators; and report observation of parametric frequency dobuling in a WGM resonator made of periodically poled lithium niobate (PPLN).

Photonic frequency synthesis and control with Whispering Gellery Mode microresonators

We report here on experimental and theorectical studies of electro-optical tunability of WGM's in high-Q monolithic lithium niobate resonators and applicability of such resonators for light modulation and filtering. Properties of an optoelectronic microwave oscillator (EOE) based on an WGM LiNbO3 resonator are discussed.

Tunability and synthetic lineshapes in high-Q optical whispering gallery modes

We demonstrate novel techniques to manipulate spectral properties of high quality factor (Q>107) whispering-gallery modes (WGM) in optical dielectric microresonators. These include permanent frequency trimming of WGM frequencies by means of UV photosensitivity of germanium doped silica resonators electro-optical tuning of WGM in lithium niobate resonators, and cascading of microresonators for obtaining second-order filtering function. We present theoretical interpretation of experimental results, and application example of techniques for photonic microwave filtering.

Parametric optics with whispering-gallery modes

We propose to fabricate a dielectric cavity sustaining high-Q whispering gallery modes from a periodically poled material possessing a quadratic nonlinearity to achieve an efficient interaction among the modes. We show that the periodical poling allows for compensation of both the material and the cavity dispersions that prohibits the nonlinear interaction otherwise. Such a cavity might be a basics element of a family of efficient nonlinear devices operating at a broad range of optical wavelengths.
