Electric-Field Manipulation of Magnetic Chirality in a Homo-Ferro-Rotational Helimagnet

Ferro-rotational (FR) materials, renowned for their distinctive material functionalities, present challenges in the growth of homo-FR crystals (i.e., single FR domain). This study explores a cost-effective approach to growing homo-FR helimagnetic RbFe(SO 4 ) 2 (RFSO) crystals by lowering the crystal growth temperature below the T FR threshold using the high-pressure hydrothermal method. Through polarized neutron diffraction experiments, it is observed that nearly 86% of RFSO crystals consist of a homo-FR domain. Notably, RFSO displays remarkable stability in the FR phase, with an exceptionally high T FR of ≈573 K. Furthermore, RFSO exhibits a chiral helical magnetic structure with switchable ferroelectric polarization below 4 K. Importantly, external electric fields can induce a single magnetic domain state and manipulate its magnetic chirality. The findings suggest that the search for new FR magnets with outstanding material properties should consider magnetic sulfates as promising candidates.

Magnetic Helicity in a Chiral-Polar Magnet Ni 2 InSbO 6

The class of chiral-polar magnets has recently captured significant interest in scientific study due to their intriguing physical phenomena. Among all the chiral-polar magnets, Ni 2 InSbO 6 stands out because of its unique attributes, such as the emergence of the topological chiral soliton lattice in the presence of an external magnetic field perpendicular to the chiral-polar axis. However, the magnetic structure of Ni 2 InSbO 6 at zero field has not been well understood yet. This work presents an analysis including polarized optical microscopy and polarized neutron diffraction on a carefully chosen Ni 2 InSbO 6 crystal. Here, results confirm the predominance of a single chiral-polar domain within the crystal and indicate the likelihood of cycloidal magnetic ordering under zero magnetic field, alongside the observation of net magnetic helicity. The existence of both a dominant chiral-polar domain and a dominant cycloidal magnetic domain within Ni 2 InSbO 6 provides an excellent platform for further exploration of its unconventional physical attributes.

Static and dynamical properties of the spin-$\frac{5}{2}$ nearly ideal triangular lattice antiferromagnet $\mathrm{Ba_3}$ $\mathrm{MnSb_2}$ $\mathrm{O_9}$

Here, we study the ground state and spin excitations in Ba 3 MnSb 2 O 9 , an easy-plane S = 5/2 triangular lattice antiferromagnet. By combining single-crystal neutron scattering, electric spin resonance (ESR), and spin wave calculations, we determine the frustrated quasi-two-dimensional spin Hamiltonian parameters describing the material. While the material has a slight monoclinic structural distortion, which could allow for isosceles-triangular exchanges and biaxial anisotropy by symmetry, we observe no deviation from the behavior expected for spin waves in the in-plane $120$° state. Even the easy-plane anisotropy is so small that it can only be detected by ESR in our study. In conjunction with the quasi-two-dimensionality, our study establishes that Ba 3 MnSb 2 O 9 is a nearly ideal triangular lattice antiferromagnet with the quasiclassical spin S = 5/2, which suggests that it has the potential for an experimental study of Z- or Z 2 -vortex excitations.

Studies on the structure and the magnetic properties of high-entropy spinel oxide (MgMnFeCoNi)Al 2 O 4

The study of high-entropy materials has attracted enormous interest since they could show new functional properties that are not observed in their related parent phases. Here, we report single crystal growth, structure, thermal transport, and magnetic property studies on a novel high-entropy oxide with the spinel structure (MgMnFeCoNi)Al 2 O 4 . We have successfully grown high-quality single crystals of this high-entropy oxide using the optical floating zone growth technique for the first time. The sample was confirmed to be a phase pure high-entropy oxide using x-ray diffraction and energy-dispersive spectroscopy. Through magnetization measurements, we found (MgMnFeCoNi)Al 2 O 4 exhibits a cluster spin glass state, though the parent phases show either antiferromagnetic ordering or spin glass states. Furthermore, we also found that (MgMnFeCoNi)Al 2 O 4 has much greater thermal expansion than its CoAl 2 O 4 parent compound using high resolution neutron Larmor diffraction. We further investigated the structure of this high-entropy material via Raman spectroscopy and extended x-ray absorption fine structure spectroscopy (EXAFS) measurements. From Raman spectroscopy measurements, we observed (MgMnFeCoNi)Al 2 O 4 to display a combination of the active Raman modes in its parent compounds with the modes shifted and significantly broadened. This result, together with the varying bond lengths probed by EXAFS, reveals severe local lattice distortions in this high-entropy phase. Additionally, we found a substantial decrease in thermal conductivity and suppression of the low temperature thermal conductivity peak in (MgMnFeCoNi)Al 2 O 4 , consistent with the increased lattice defects and strain. These findings advance the understanding of the dependence of thermal expansion and transport on the lattice distortions in high-entropy materials.

Short-range magnetic correlations in quasicrystalline i -Tb-Cd

Here, we report on elastic and inelastic neutron scattering from single-grain isotopically enriched samples to elucidate the local magnetic correlations between Tb 3+ moments in quasicrystalline i -Tb-Cd. The inelastic neutron scattering measurements of the crystalline electric field excitations demonstrated that the Tb 3+ moments are directed primarily along the local fivefold axes of the Tsai-type cluster as was found for the TbCd 6 approximant phase. Based on the inelastic measurements, we consider a simple Ising-type model for the moment configurations on a single Tb 3+ icosahedron and enumerate the lowest energy moment configurations. We then calculate the diffuse scattering from these configurations and compare with the experimental magnetic diffuse scattering measurements to identify the most likely single cluster moment configurations and find reasonable agreement between the broad features observed in our scattering simulations. We further use a heuristic glass model as well as large-scale Monte-Carlo simulations of a multicluster model to consider the role of higher-order (longer-range) intercluster correlations for magnetic frustration and the magnetic scattering.

Neutron polarization analysis of the anisotropic spin wave excitations in multiferroic BiFeO 3

A multiferroic material BiFeO 3 shows a cycloidal spin structure below 640 K. Anisotropy of the magnetic excitations below 6 meV was previously studied using neutron polarization analysis (Zhang et al. 2022 Phys. Rev. B 105 144426). The magnetic excitations in and out of the cycloidal plane were separated and compared to those calculated based on the linear spin-wave theory. The overall feature of the observed excitations was found to be consistent with those calculated. Further polarized neutron study with extended energy range has been performed. The anisotropy of the magnetic excitations is present at least up to 15 meV. The out-of-plane mode is constantly more intense by ~50% than the in-plane mode in the energy range between 3 and 15 meV. The anisotropic excitations in the wide energy range are unexpected since multiple in-plane and out-of-plane modes are mixed at higher energies and the excitations are expected to become more isotropic.

Magnetic Structure and Spin Fluctuation in Colossal Magnetoresistance Ferrimagnet Mn 3 Si 2 Te 6

The ferrimagnetic insulator Mn 3 Si 2 Te 6 , which features a Curie temperature T c at 78 K and a delicate yet consequential magnetic frustration, exhibits colossal magnetoresistance (CMR) when the magnetic field is applied along the magnetic hard axis, surprisingly inconsistent with existing precedents [Y. Ni, H. Zhao, Y. Zhang, B. Hu, I. Kimchi, and G. Cao, Phys. Rev. B 103, L161105 (2021)]. This discovery motivates a thorough single-crystal neutron diffraction study in order to gain insights into the magnetic structure and its hidden correlation with the new type of CMR. Here we report a noncollinear magnetic structure below the T c where the moments lie predominantly within the basal plane but tilt toward the c axis by ≈10° at ambient conditions. A substantial magnetic diffuse scattering decays slowly and persists well above the T c . The evolution of the spin correlation lengths agrees well with the electrical resistivity, underscoring the role of spin fluctuation contributing to the magnetoresistivity near the transition. Further, application of magnetic field along the c axis renders a swift occurrence of CMR but only a slow tilting of the magnetic moments toward the c axis. The unparalleled changes indicate a nonconsequential role of magnetic polarization.

Hidden Local Symmetry Breaking in a Kagome-Lattice Magnetic Weyl Semimetal

Exploring the relationship between intriguing physical properties and structural complexity is a central topic in studying modern functional materials. Co 3 Sn 2 S 2 , a newly discovered kagome-lattice magnetic Weyl semimetal, has triggered intense interest owing to the intimate coupling between topological semimetallic states and peculiar magnetic properties. However, the origins of the magnetic phase separation and spin glass state below T C in this ordered compound are two unresolved yet important puzzles in understanding its magnetism. Here, we report the discovery of local symmetry breaking surprisingly co-emerges with the onset of ferromagnetic order in Co 3 Sn 2 S 2 , by a combined use of neutron total scattering and half-polarized neutron diffraction. An anisotropic distortion of the cobalt kagome lattice at the atomic/nano level is also found, with distinct distortion directions among the two Co1 and four Co2 atoms. The mismatch of local and average symmetries occurs below T C , indicating that Co 3 Sn 2 S 2 evolves to an intrinsically lattice disordered system when the ferromagnetic order is established. The local symmetry breaking with intrinsic lattice disorder provides new understanding of the puzzling magnetic properties. Our density functional theory (DFT) calculation indicates that the local symmetry breaking is expected to reorient local ferromagnetic moments, unveiling the existence of the ferromagnetic instability associated with the lattice instability. Furthermore, DFT calculation unveils that the local symmetry breaking could affect the Weyl property by breaking the mirror plane. In conclusion, our findings highlight the fundamentally important role that the local symmetry breaking plays in advancing our understanding on the magnetic and topological properties in Co 3 Sn 2 S 2 , which may draw attention to explore the overlooked local symmetry breaking in Co 3 Sn 2 S 2 , its derivatives and more broadly in other topological Dirac/Weyl semimetals and kagome-lattice magnets.

Quantum Effect on the Ground State of the Triple-Perovskite Ba 3 MNb 2 O 9 (M = Co, Ni, and Mn) with Triangular-Lattice

As the simplest example of geometrical frustration, the two-dimensional triangular lattice antiferromagnet exhibits the mismatch between the lattice geometry and spin-exchange interaction, which has been the subject of intensive studies due to its exotic quantum phenomena. In this work, we performed detailed studies of the magnetic structures and spin wave excitations by neutron powder diffraction and inelastic neutron scattering measurements on the triple-perovskite oxides Ba 3 MNb 2 O 9 (M = Co, Ni, and Mn) with triangular-lattice geometry. The interplay between the frustrated interaction and easy-plane/axis anisotropy gives rise to two magnetic phase transition temperatures for Ba 3 CoNb 2 O 9 (Ba 3 MnNb 2 O 9 ) and only one for Ba 3 NiNb 2 O 9 . The linear spin-wave theory +1/S calculations indicate that both spatial dimensionality and the spin size have a significant impact on the strength of quantum fluctuations, which lead to their different magnetic ground states and exotic physical properties. Moreover, the effects of the thermal fluctuations are presented for Ba 3 NiNb 2 O 9 .

Pressure dependence of the magnetic ground state in CePtSi 2

CePtSi 2 was reported to exhibit an antiferromagnetic order below T*=1.8 K at ambient pressure, a valence state change at ~1.2 GPa, and superconductivity in the range between 1.4 and 2.1 GPa with a maximum transition temperature of 0.14 K [T. Nakano et al., Phys. Rev. B 79, 172507 (2009)]. We have performed polycrystalline and single-crystal neutron diffraction experiments to determine the magnetic structure under ambient and high pressures. We found incommensurate magnetic peaks with a magnetic propagation vector of (0.32,0,0.11) at ambient pressure below T SDW ~ 1.25 K. Those magnetic peaks originate from a spin-density-wave order with the easy axis along the c axis and an averaged ordered moment of 0.45(5) μB , suggesting that there may be an intermediate phase between T* and T SDW . Applying pressures, the magnetic propagation vector shows no change and the magnetic order disappears around 1.0 GPa, which is much lower than the critical pressure for the superconducting phase. The results suggest that other than magnetic fluctuations may play a primary role in the superconducting pairing mechanism.

SrV 0.3 Fe 0.7 O 2.8 : A Vacancy-Ordered Fe-Based Perovskite Exhibiting Room-Temperature Magnetoresistance

We report room-temperature (RT) magnetoresistance (MR) in a novel Fe-based perovskite, SrV 0.3 Fe 0.7 O 2.8 . This compound contains ordered oxygen vacancies in every fifth primitive perovskite (111)p plane, leading to a layered structure consisting of triple-octahedral and double-tetrahedral layers. Along with the oxygen vacancies, the transition-metal ions are also ordered: the octahedral sites are occupied by 100% of Fe ions, while the tetrahedral sites are occupied by 25% of Fe ions and 75% of V ions. As a result, SrV 0.3 Fe 0.7 O 2.8 forms a magnetically striped lattice in which the octahedral layers with 100% of magnetic Fe ions are separated by the diluted magnetic layer. Finally, the compound exhibits weak ferromagnetism and shows a large negative MR (-5% at 3 T) at RT, despite the small saturation moment (0.4 μB/Fe atom). Thus, this type of layered compound is promising for further large MR by an increase of magnetization through chemical substitution.

Evidence for pressure induced unconventional quantum criticality in the coupled spin ladder antiferromagnet C 9 H 18 N 2 CuBr 4

Quantum phase transitions in quantum matter occur at zero temperature between distinct ground states by tuning a nonthermal control parameter. Often, they can be accurately described within the Landau theory of phase transitions, similarly to conventional thermal phase transitions. However, this picture can break down under certain circumstances. Here, we present a comprehensive study of the effect of hydrostatic pressure on the magnetic structure and spin dynamics of the spin-1/2 ladder compound C 9 H 18 N 2 CuBr 4 . Single-crystal heat capacity and neutron diffraction measurements reveal that the Néel-ordered phase breaks down beyond a critical pressure of Pc~1.0 GPa through a continuous quantum phase transition. Estimates of the critical exponents suggest that this transition may fall outside the traditional Landau paradigm. The inelastic neutron scattering spectra at 1.3 GPa are characterized by two well-separated gapped modes, including one continuum-like and another resolution-limited excitation in distinct scattering channels, which further indicates an exotic quantum-disordered phase above Pc.

Anisotropic spin-wave excitations in multiferroic BiFeO 3

Polarized inelastic neutron-scattering experiments have been performed to elucidate the anisotropic behavior of the low-energy spin-wave excitations in a multiferroic BiFeO 3 , which shows a cycloidal spin structure below 640 K. Using neutron polarization analysis for single magnetic domain crystals, magnetic excitation modes in and out of the cycloidal plane below 6 meV were separated successfully. The magnetic excitation spectra were analyzed using linear spin-wave theory. The low-energy magnon density of states consist of several magnon modes, including the two anisotropic modes, Φ and Ψ modes, distributed in and out of the cycloidal plane, respectively, which were previously observed using optical spectroscopies. Furthermore, there are other magnon modes that are not active in optical measurements. Additionally, a model spin Hamiltonian, which reproduces the spin-wave frequencies observed using optical spectroscopies, explains the overall spectra reasonably well.

Hyperfine Splitting and Nuclear Spin Polarization in NdPd 5 Al 2 and Nd 3 Pd 20 Ge 6

Here the hyperfine splitting of Nd nuclei in NdPd 5 Al 2 was studied by means of high-resolution neutron spectroscopy. We observed inelastic peaks at ℏω = ±3 µeV and T = 0.3 K, originating from the hyperfine splitting in the magnetically ordered phase owing to the hyperfine interactions between Nd nuclei (I = 7/2) and the 4f electrons with the Γ 6 ground state composed of mainly |±9/2$\rangle$. At very low temperatures, the nuclear spin of Nd is polarized with an increasing occupation probability of low energy levels and contributes to the enhancement of the antiferromagnetic Bragg intensities; the elastic non-spin-flip channel is dominant. As an application of this phenomenon, we determined the Nd moment and hyperfine splitting from the temperature dependence of an antiferromagnetic Bragg intensity for Nd 3 Pd 20 Ge 6 .

Noncollinear spin structure with weak ferromagnetism in NbMnP

NbMnP is a metallic material, which consists of the zigzag chains of Mn moments along the b axis. The magnetic susceptibility as well as the resistivity shows an anomaly at 233 K, which indicates an antiferromagnetic phase transition. Our neutron powder diffraction experiment reveals that the magnetic structure is a Q=0 structure and noncollinear with an easy plane anisotropy perpendicular to the b axis, and the a- and c-axis magnetic components align antiferromagnetically and ferromagnetically along the zigzag chain direction, respectively. The ordered moment is 1.2μ B , which is reduced probably due to the itineracy of the Mn moments. A localized picture model suggests that the Q=0 magnetic structure is formed by the frustration among several exchange couplings. A weak ferromagnetic component is also present in the antiferromagnetic phase, which is considered to be caused by a Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction.

Formation of short-range magnetic order and avoided ferromagnetic quantum criticality in pressurized LaCrGe 3

LaCrGe 3 has attracted attention as a paradigm example of the avoidance of ferromagnetic (FM) quantum criticality in an itinerant magnet. In this work, we combined thermodynamic (specific heat and thermal expansion), transport, x-ray, and neutron scattering as well as μSR measurements to obtain insights on the temperature-pressure phase diagram of LaCrGe 3 . Consistent with previous studies of the phase diagram by transport measurements, our thermodynamic data shows clearly that the FM transition at T FM changes its character from second order to first order when it is suppressed to low temperatures by pressure. In addition, previous studies demonstrated that for high pressures a new phase occurs below T 2 , which was proposed to be a long-wavelength antiferromagnetic state (AFM q ). In this paper, we provide evidence from our thermodynamic data that this phase transition is preceded by yet another phase transition at T 1 >T 2 . Our μSR data indicate that full magnetic volume fraction is only established below T 2 , but that this magnetism is characterized by a short correlation length. Within the experimental resolution, our neutron-scattering data is not able to identify any magnetic Bragg peaks. Overall, the microscopic magnetic data is therefore consistent with the formation of FM clusters in the proximity of the avoided FM quantum critical point in LaCrGe 3 . This conclusion is at odds with the previous proposal of AFM q order and raises questions on the role of disorder in this stochiometric compound.

Complex magnetic phases in the polar tetragonal intermetallic NdCoGe 3

Polar materials can host a variety of topologically significant magnetic phases, which often emerge from a modulated magnetic ground state. Relatively few noncentrosymmetric tetragonal materials have been shown to host topological spin textures and new candidate materials are necessary to expand the current theoretical models. This manuscript reports on the anisotropic magnetism in the polar, tetragonal material NdCoGe 3 via thermodynamic and neutron diffraction measurements. The previously reported H - T phase diagram is updated to include several additional phases, which exist for both H = 0 and with an applied field H ⊥ c . Neutron diffraction data reveal that the magnetic structures below T N 1 = 3.70 K and T N 2 = 3.50 K are incommensurate, with a ground-state magnetic order that is incommensurate in all directions with the propagation vector $\vec{k}$ = (0.494, 0.0044, 0.385) at 1.8 K. A unique magnetic structure solution is not achievable, but the possible single-$\vec{k}$ and $\vec{k}$ spin models are discussed. These results demonstrate that NdCoGe 3 hosts complicated magnetic order derived from modulated magnetic moments.

Magnetic excitations affected by spin-lattice coupling in the S=3/2 triangular lattice antiferromagnet Ag 2 CrO 2

Ag 2 CrO 2 is an S=3/2 triangular lattice antiferromagnet in which long-range magnetic order with a fivefold magnetic unit cell appears below the transition temperature (T N ) of 24 K. The long-range magnetic order is accompanied by a structural transition. Inelastic neutron scattering experiments were performed to investigate the magnetic interactions, anisotropy, and correlations in this material. Above T N , diffuse scattering originating from the short-ranged magnetic correlations consistent with a 120° structure was observed. Here, the magnetic excitations below T N were reproduced reasonably well using a linear spin-wave model with further-neighbor interactions and easy-axis anisotropy, which are predicted to be due to a previously proposed spin-lattice coupling.
