W28 and 3C 400.2 - Two shell-like radio supernova remnants with centrally peaked X-ray morphologies

The paper describes X-ray and optical observations with the Einstein Observatory of two SNRs which are examples of a group of SNRs that have centrally peaked X-ray surface brightness distributions and limb-brightened radio morphologies. X-ray and optical spectra confirm that they are located along lines of sight with substantial intervening absorption, as is the case of other objects that have these morphological characteristics. The hydrogen column density along the line of sight to both remnants is established at (7-11) x 10 to the 21st/sq cm. A thermal origin is proposed as the most likely explanation for the X-ray morphology. It is demonstrated that these SNRs do not have a density and temperature distribution which resembles that of a point explosion in a uniform-density medium, even when the overburden of absorption is considered.

A progress report on grazing incidence optics fabrication and evaluation

The progress being made on a mirror array telescope for high energies (MARTHE) project is reported. As a first step, small mirror flats and full-size Wolter I mirrors are produced that are lacquer coated (mandrels) and then coated with gold or palladium. The up-to-date results of fabricating and testing these mirrors are presented. Currently, results can be provided on the micro-roughness, marco-figure, X-ray scattering, and reflectivity up to 8 keV from flats and Wolter I mirrors as well as optical measurements of the flats.

The evolution of the radio emission from Kepler's Supernova remnant

High-resolution radio maps of Kepler's Supernova remnant (SNR) using all four arrays of the VLA have been obtained at wavelengths of 20 and 6 cm. They show the complete structure of the remnant; all features are resolved with sizes greater than about 2 arcsec, and the relative brightness of the smooth component near the center is about 1/4 the brightness of the rim. The results have been compared with earlier more limited data to measure changes in the remnant over a four-year time span. The SNR is expanding with a mean rate of R proportional to t exp 0.50 with considerable variations around the shell. Values range from R proportional to t exp 0.35 on the bright northern rim to R proportional to t exp 0.65 on the eastern part of the shell. The measurements are consistent with expansion into a variable circumstellar medium.

X-ray and optical profiler analysis of electroformed X-ray optics

Electroformed grazing incidence mirrors were tested with X-rays and were measured with an optical profiler. Their total effective areas are greater than about 70 percent of the theoretical values both for 1.5- and 6.4-keV X-rays. The half-power diameters are less than about 2 min of arc at 1.5 keV. A design of the mirror array telescope for high energies which has a total effective area of about 1000 sq cm for 7-keV X-rays is presented.

Electroformed grazing incidence X-ray mirrors for a mirror array telescope

Grazing incidence Wolter type I mirrors for higher-energy X-rays have been replicated from two superpolished mandrels by electroforming. Single mirrors and a nested pair were tested with 1.5- and 6.4-keV X-rays, and their subminute of arc resolution and reflectivity close to the theoretical values are confirmed. The design of the mandrels, the mirror mounting scheme, and results of the X-ray test are presented. The microroughnesses of the mirrors measured using an optical profilometer were compared with the X-ray test results.
