Multi-delay coherence imaging spectroscopy optimized for ion temperature measurements in the divertor plasma of the Wendelstein 7-X stellarator

A new coherence imaging spectroscopy (CIS) diagnostic optimized to measure the C 2+ impurity ion temperature T i spatial distribution in the divertor plasma of the W7-X stellarator is designed, tested, and validated. Using CIS to obtain T i in the edge of magnetically confined plasmas has historically been challenging because Doppler broadening and Zeeman splitting have comparable effects on the shape of spectral emission lines. To distinguish between these two mechanisms, a novel approach to birefringent crystal design is employed to minimize the diagnostic’s sensitivity to Zeeman splitting. The recently developed pixelated multi-delay CIS approach is also used to obtain four times as much spectral information as traditional CIS approaches. The T i -optimized CIS diagnostic is validated in a long-pulse W7-X plasma by comparison with a high-resolution spectrometer whose sightlines overlap with the CIS field of view. The CIS and spectrometer T i profiles have the same shape and agree to within 10% on average and 25% in the worst case. Images of the T i distribution near the divertor show toroidally elongated bands aligned with the magnetic field, with T i ranging between 10 and 40 eV.

Flexible Stellarator Physics Facility

We propose to build a Flexible Stellarator Physics Facility to explore promising regions of the vast parameter space of disruption-free stellarator solutions for Fusion Pilot Plants (FPPs). The FESAC Long Range Plan recognized the quasi-symmetric stellarator as “the leading US approach to developing disruption-free, low-recirculating-power fusion configurations”. To deliver the ambitious Decadal Vision for Commercial Fusion Energy, we must establish a persuasive stellarator program in parallel to the tokamak one: the stellarator will prove to be a better path to a reactor if theoretical predictions are confirmed and novel optimization techniques and strategies work as desired. Since the release of the Long Range Plan in 2020, stellarators have arguably made the most significant advances of all fusion concepts. Groundbreaking results from W7-X demonstrated low neoclassical transport and the successful operation of the island divertor. Advances in theory and modeling now allow us to minimize turbulent transport, to achieve equilibria with precise quasisymmetry, to reduce neoclassical transport and fast ion loss to levels far below what has been previously achieved, and to minimize the effect of coil manufacturing errors. If realized, these advances will lead to cost-effective stellarator designs with confinement comparable to tokamaks but without the fundamental challenges of disruptions and current drive.

Sawtooth oscillation behavior with varying amounts of applied stellarator rotational transform.

In this study, tokamak-like sawtooth oscillations are observed in the Compact Toroidal Hybrid (CTH), a current-carrying stellarator. CTH has the unique ability to change the amount of the applied vacuum rotational transform from external stellarator coils relative to the rotational transform generated by the internal plasma current to investigate the effects of strong three-dimensional magnetic shaping on sawtooth behavior. The observed sawteeth in CTH, for plasmas with monotonically decreasing rotational transform profiles dominated by the plasma current, have characteristics of those observed on tokamaks including (1) a central emissivity rise and then a sudden crash with a well-defined inversion radius, (2) the presence of an m = 1 emissivity fluctuation, and (3) the normalized inversion surface radius scales with the total edge rotational transform. We explore the properties of an ensemble of discharges in CTH in which the fractional rotational transform, defined as the vacuum rotational transform divided by the total rotational transform, is systematically varied from 0.04 to 0.42 to observe changes in sawtooth oscillation dynamics. Over this range of the fractional rotational transform, the measured sawtooth period decreased by a factor of two. At a high fractional rotational transform, the sawtooth amplitude is observed to consist of only low-amplitude oscillations while the measured crash time of the sawtooth oscillation does not appear to have a strong dependence on the amount of the fractional transform applied. Lastly, experimental results indicate that the low-amplitude sawteeth are accompanied by a decrease in the sawtooth period and predominantly correlated with the mean elongation (due to the increasing fractional rotational transform) of the non-axisymmetric plasmas within CTH rather than other global equilibrium parameters.

Uncertainty Analysis in 3D Equilibrium Reconstruction

Reconstruction is an inverse process where a parameter space is searched to locate a set of parameters with the highest probability of describing experimental observations. Due to systematic errors and uncertainty in experimental measurements, this optimal set of parameters will contain some associated uncertainty. This uncertainty in the optimal parameters leads to uncertainty in models derived using those parameters. V3FIT is a three-dimensional (3D) equilibrium reconstruction code that propagates uncertainty from the input signals, to the reconstructed parameters, and to the final model. Here in this paper, we describe the methods used to propagate uncertainty in V3FIT. Using the results of whole shot 3D equilibrium reconstruction of the Compact Toroidal Hybrid, this propagated uncertainty is validated against the random variation in the resulting parameters. Two different model parameterizations demonstrate how the uncertainty propagation can indicate the quality of a reconstruction. As a proxy for random sampling, the whole shot reconstruction results in a time interval that will be used to validate the propagated uncertainty from a single time slice.
