Density Measurements of Various Molten Sodium, Magnesium, Potassium, and Uranium Chloride Salt Compositions Using Neutron Imaging

With an increased interest in the use of molten salts for energy generation, obtaining thermophysical properties of salt mixtures becomes critical for the understanding of salt performance and behavior. Density is one of the significant thermophysical properties of salt systems. This work presents the density measurement of molten chloride salt mixtures using neutron imaging. This work was performed at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory High-Flux Isotope Reactor. Here, resulting densities as a function of temperature for different molten chloride salts from this work were compared with calculated values using Redlich–Kister modeling. Agreement between the calculated and measured values was within 1–10%, with the exception of the ternary UCl 3 –NaCl–KCl salt that showed a 32% discrepancy between several literature reports; however, the results did align well with another neutron radiography article. Analysis of the radiographs suggests that microbubbles in the ternary mixture might have biased the density measurements.

Thermal analysis of non-actinide bearing salt

The Netzsch STA 409 CD 403/5/G STA-MS Skimmer Coupling System was used to perform thermal analysis on FLiNaK to establish a method for characterizing vapor pressures over molten salts. The measurements include differential scanning calorimetry, thermogravimetry, and mass spectrometry to generate comprehensive thermochemical property data as stand-alone information to aid in MSR design and licensing as well as inputs into the Molten Salt Thermodynamic Database (MSTDB). The FY20 focus is to establish procedures and quantify uncertainty levels for measurements of non-actinide compositions for moving toward actinide bearing salt measurements in FY21.

Thermophysical Property Measurements on Salt Mixture

Thermal conductivity, specific heat, viscosity, and density are critical properties for understanding thermal hydraulics of heat transfer fluids (HTFs) like molten salts. These properties are important for design and safe operation of any HTF loop. These characterizations are required to benchmark computational chemical models that are used to predict properties, but existent data are limited. These measurements are extremely difficult to make due to the operating temperature range and corrosive properties of the salt.Density measurements are needed to predict volumetric behavior. Thermal expansion mismatches can cause mechanical failure of structural materials and important components that are in contact with the molten salt. All of these properties are related to heat transfer in HTFs. The heat generated in a reactor must be high enough to derive power; however it should not be so hot that it cannot be safely removed via the HTF at an appropriate rate. It is important to understand the thermal hydraulics required to operate at the desired power generation level and to avoid situations in which thermal shifts can damage components, cause failure of structural materials, and/or lead to accidents. Understanding these thermal properties can aid in component and process design and can contribute to optimized operational and safety parameters.
