Electrochemical Cell with Improved Water or Gas Management

An electrochemical cell having a water/gas porous separator prepared from a polymeric material and one or more conductive cell components that pass through, or are located in close proximity to, the water/gas porous separator, is provided. The inventive cell provides a high level of in-cell electrical conductivity.

Electrolysis Propulsion for Spacecraft Applications

Electrolysis propulsion has been recognized over the last several decades as a viable option to meet many satellite and spacecraft propulsion requirements. This technology, however, was never used for in-space missions. In the same time frame, water based fuel cells have flown in a number of missions. These systems have many components similar to electrolysis propulsion systems. Recent advances in component technology include: lightweight tankage, water vapor feed electrolysis, fuel cell technology, and thrust chamber materials for propulsion. Taken together, these developments make propulsion and/or power using electrolysis/fuel cell technology very attractive as separate or integrated systems. A water electrolysis propulsion testbed was constructed and tested in a joint NASA/Hamilton Standard/Lawrence Livermore National Laboratories program to demonstrate these technology developments for propulsion. The results from these testbed experiments using a I-N thruster are presented. A concept to integrate a propulsion system and a fuel cell system into a unitized spacecraft propulsion and power system is outlined.

SPE OBOGS: On-board Oxygen Generating System

Regulations require oxygen usage by commercial airliners during check out and during certain aircraft configurations. This oxygen is drawn from a high pressure on-board cylinder storage system. In a typical aircraft, oxygen cylinder removal for oxygen ground servicing is conducted every 4 to 6 weeks. In the early 1990's, it was recognized that an on-board oxygen generating system (OBOGS) could provide an economic advantage for the airlines. An in-flight service evaluation (ISE) of the SPE-OBOGS by United Technologies Corporate is in the planning stage.

Method and an apparatus for detecting ionizable substance

The amount of ionizable substance within a stream can be continuously monitored through the use of an ionizable substance detector. The substance is ionized at an electrode producing ions and free electrons. The ions are transported across an ion exchange membrane, while the free electrons flow through a power source. The current, produced by the electrons, is proportional to the amount of substance in the stream. Continuous monitoring can be useful in early detection of problems, or system fluctuations.
