Reconstruction of Pre- and Post-Test Surfaces at the U-20az BARNWELL Site, Nevada National Security Site
Technical report on results of photogrammetric reconstruction task at NNSS. Modern photogrammetric methods were applied to historic aerial photographs taken six days before and four days after the BARNWELL underground nuclear explosion (UNE) to recreate the pre-UNE topography and the fresh post-UNE surface. The surfaces were compared to each other to characterize surface effects of the BARNWELL UNE. Topographic changes between the pre-UNE and post-UNE surfaces were limited to minor rock fall and intentional changes related to construction activities. Methods developed in this study could potentially be used across a much wider area to discover and catalogue as yet undescribed subtle underground nuclear explosion surface effects.
