Comparison of Measured and Simulated Neutron Counting with 3He Detectors and the Subcritical Water-Moderated UO2 7uPCX Assembly

An experiment designed to compare neutron noise analysis techniques on subcritical assemblies using differing neutron detector designs was developed as a collaborative effort between the Institut de radioprotection et de surete nucleaire (IRSN), Los Alamos (LANL), Lawrence Livermore (LLNL), and Sandia National Laboratories. This experiment has the final goal of characterizing neutron noise analysis accuracy in determining multiplication in light water systems for various neutron detection systems. This experiment utilized the Seven Percent Critical Experiment (7uPCX) facility at Sandia National Laboratories. The 7uPCX is an assembly designed to investigate light water systems with fuel enrichment above 5% and is able to use square or hex grid plates with varying pitches.

National Criticality Experiments Research Center (NCERC) Recent Measurements and Capabilities [Slides]

The National Criticality Experiments Research Center (NCERC) is operated by Los Alamos National Laboratory and has four critical assemblies (Including Godiva, which can be operated above prompt critical). Subcritical measurements are also performed. NCERC is the only general-purpose critical experiments facility in the US and is one of only a few that remain operational throughout the world.

Nuclear Criticality Safety Fundamentals [Slides]

Objectives of this presentation are: 1. Explain the difference between radiation safety vs. criticality safety, 2. Define criticality, 3. Explain the three types of chain reactions, 4. Define two terms scientists use to characterize criticality, 5. Explain what occurs during a criticality accident, 6. Identify prevention measures for avoiding a criticality accident, and 7. Identify the parameters that effect criticality of a system.
