A Decade of X-Vehicles: Lessons Learned

The paper discusses the following: Collect lessons learned from successful and unsuccessful X-vehicle programs conducted by DoD and NASA during the 1990s. Evaluate data to determine broad/cross cutting reasons for success. Propose guidelines that will promote successful future NASA X-vehicle program.

Bantam: A Cautionary Tale

This viewgraph presentation reviews the history of the Bantam program that was cancelled in 1999 due to the decision that the focus on the small payloads was unsustainable and that there would be no return on investment. The comparison is made between NASA's Bantam program, and DARPA's (Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency) two similar projects (Falcon and Rascal). The Bantam Program was to be a small launch vehicle, aimed at launching small payloads (i.e., of 150-300 kg) into space.

The Peroxide Pathway

NASA's current focus on technology roadmaps as a tool for guiding investment decisions leads naturally to a discussion of NASA's roadmap for peroxide propulsion system development. NASA's new Second Generation Space Transportation System roadmap calls for an integrated Reusable Upper-Stage (RUS) engine technology demonstration in the FY03/FY04 time period. Preceding this integrated demonstration are several years of component developments and subsystem technology demonstrations. NASA and the Air Force took the first steps at developing focused upper stage technologies with the initiation of the Upper Stage Flight Experiment with Orbital Sciences in December 1997. A review of this program's peroxide propulsion development is a useful first step in establishing the peroxide propulsion pathway that could lead to a RUS demonstration in 2004.
