Marshall Space Flight Center Electromagnetic Compatibility Design and Interference Control (MEDIC) handbook

The purpose of the MEDIC Handbook is to provide practical and helpful information in the design of electrical equipment for electromagnetic compatibility (EMS). Included is the definition of electromagnetic interference (EMI) terms and units as well as an explanation of the basic EMI interactions. An overview of typical NASA EMI test requirements and associated test setups is given. General design techniques to minimize the risk of EMI and EMI suppression techniques at the board and equipment interface levels are presented. The Handbook contains specific EMI test compliance design techniques and retrofit fixes for noncompliant equipment. Also presented are special tests that are useful in the design process or in instances of specification noncompliance.

Spacecraft environments interactions: Protecting against the effects of spacecraft charging

The effects of the natural space environments on spacecraft design, development, and operation are the topic of a series of NASA Reference Publications currently being developed by the Electromagnetics and Environments Branch, Systems Analysis and Integration Laboratory, Marshall Space Flight Center. This primer, second in the series, describes the interactions between a spacecraft and the natural space plasma. Under certain environmental/spacecraft conditions, these interactions result in the phenomenon known as spacecraft charging. It is the focus of this publication to describe the phenomenon of spacecraft charging and its possible adverse effects on spacecraft and to present the key elements of a Spacecraft Charging Effects Protection Plan.

Determining and controlling the electromagnetic environment for Space Station Freedom

Critical issues facing the SSF electromagnetic compatibility community are discussed focusing on effective utilization of SSF resources to perform overall SSF verification. Attention is also given to management and phases of an Electromagnetic Environment Effects Control Program (EEECP) aimed at producing an electromagnetically compatible station.
