Using NASTRAN To Analyze Vibrations Of Rotor Blades

Report gives information on use of NASTRAN computer program in finite-element analysis of rotating flexible blades like in compressors and on turboprop engines. Predicts steady-state components of deflections and stresses under centrifugal forces, generates data for plots of natural frequency versus rotational speed, and provides vibration-mode data for calculations of flutter. Describes use of NASTRAN solution sequence 64 for geometrical nonlinear analysis and solution sequence 63 for determination of frequencies and vibrational-mode shapes. Includes sample problem with NASTRAN input data. Emphasizes key factors in analysis of rotating blades, such as setting angle and centrifugal softening effects. Combined analyses of solution sequences 64 and 63 reduces computer time and number of output listings, in comparison with separate analyses. In central-processing-unit time cut in half.

An improved algorithm for optimum structural design with multiple frequency constraints

An optimality criterion (OC) method for minimum-weight design of structures having multiple constraints on natural frequencies is presented. In this work a new resizing strategy is developed based on relaxation techniques. A computationally adaptive control parameter is used in conjunction with existing OC recursive formulae to promote convergence of optimum structural designs. Some considerations regarding the coupling of the modified Aitken accelerator with the OC method are discussed. Improved and rapidly converged minimum-weight designs are obtained when using an under-relaxed recursive scheme combined with the modified Aitken accelerator.

Finite element analysis of flexible, rotating blades

A reference guide that can be used when using the finite element method to approximate the static and dynamic behavior of flexible, rotating blades is given. Important parameters such as twist, sweep, camber, co-planar shell elements, centrifugal loads, and inertia properties are studied. Comparisons are made between NASTRAN elements through published benchmark tests. The main purpose is to summarize blade modeling strategies and to document capabilities and limitations (for flexible, rotating blades) of various NASTRAN elements.

A NASTRAN primer for the analysis of rotating flexible blades

This primer provides documentation for using MSC NASTRAN in analyzing rotating flexible blades. The analysis of these blades includes geometrically nonlinear (large displacement) analysis under centrifugal loading, and frequency and mode shape (normal modes) determination. The geometrically nonlinear analysis using NASTRAN Solution sequence 64 is discussed along with the determination of frequencies and mode shapes using Solution Sequence 63. A sample problem with the complete NASTRAN input data is included. Items unique to rotating blade analyses, such as setting angle and centrifugal softening effects are emphasized.
