Low-energy positrons from metallic moderators in a back scattering mode.

Evaluation of preliminary results of the emission of slow (about 1 eV) positrons from solid moderators. The results presented are for copper, gold, and aluminum and were obtained using the backscatter mode of operation. Of the three metals investigated, copper is found to emit positrons with the lowest energy, while aluminum emits those with the highest energy. Several small peaks are noted on the high-energy side of the spectra, especially in the case of gold and aluminum.-

Elastic and inelastic scattering of positrons in gases and solids

Three apparatuses were designed and built: The first, which is now operative, was designed to study the details of positron thermalization in solids and the subsequent emission of the low energy positrons from moderating foils; The second apparatus now under test is a positron bottle similar in design to an electron trap. It was built to store positrons at a fixed energy and to look at the number of stored positrons (storage time) as a function of a scattering gas in the vacuum chamber. The third apparatus is a crossed beam apparatus where positron-, alkali scattering will be studied. Much of the apparatus is now under test with electrons.

Evidence for the negative work function associated with positrons in gold.

Observation that positrons which have been thermalized in various moderators and coated with approximately 200-A gold leave the gold surface with an energy which peaks between 0.75 and 2.90 eV. This energy is thought to be associated with a positron or 'negative' work function of gold.
