Structural considerations for a software life cycle dynamic simulation model

This paper presents the results of a preliminary study into the prospects for simulating the software implementation and maintenance life cycle process, with the aim of producing a computerized tool for use by management and software engineering personnel in project planning, tradeoff studies involving product, environmental, situational, and technological factors, and training. The approach taken is the modular application of a 'flow of resource' concept to the systems dynamics simulation modeling technique. The software life cycle process is represented as a number of stochastic, time-varying, interacting work tasks that each achieves one of the project milestones. Each task is characterized by the item produced, the personnel applied, and the budgetary profile.

DSN model for use in strategic planning

A System Dynamics Model of the DSN to support strategic planning for the Network is addressed. Applications for the model are described, as well as the foundations of system dynamics and the methodology used to develop the model. Activities to date and plans for future work are also discussed.

Life-cycle cost analysis task summary

The DSN life cycle cost (LCC) analysis methodology was completed. The LCC analysis methodology goals and objectives are summarized, as well as the issues covered by the methodology, its expected use, and its long range implications.

Evaluation of the DSN software methodology

The effects of the DSN software methodology, as implemented under the DSN Programming System, on the DSN Mark 3 Data Subsystems Implementation Project (MDS) are described. The software methodology is found to provide a markedly increased visibility to management, and to produce software of greater reliability at a small decrease in implementation cost. It is also projected that additional savings will result during the maintenance phase. Documentation support is identified as an area that is receiving further attention.

Evaluation of the developing DSN life-cycle cost standard practice

The DSN is developing a life-cycle cost standard practice by comparison to those of industry and the Department of Defense. Results show that the DSN uses the accepted concept of life-cycle costing, tailoring the concept to DSN specific needs, but does not push the concept past the point of prevailing theory.

Cost evaluation of a DSN high level real-time language

The hypothesis that the implementation of a DSN High Level Real Time Language will reduce real time software expenditures is explored. The High Level Real Time Language is found to be both affordable and cost-effective.

Cost reduction potential of the DSN data base

The cost of the DSN data base can be reduced by computerizing and unifying the current multiplicity of separate manual, computer, and hybrid data bases. Savings would accrue from eliminating all manual system costs, increasing efficiency in data base implementation and maintenance-and-operation, and increasing data accuracy. By applying a simple mathematical savings model to current data base costs, this study estimates the probable range of net ten-year savings. The minimum net savings, under the assumptions of the study, are calculated as $7.5 million.
