Modeling techniques used in the communications link analysis and simulation system (CLASS)

CLASS (Communications Link Analysis and Simulation System) is a software package developed for NASA to predict the communication and tracking performance of the Tracking and Data Relay Satellite System (TDRSS) services. The modeling techniques used in CLASS are described. The components of TDRSS and the performance parameters to be computed by CLASS are too diverse to permit the use of a single technique to evaluate all performance measures. Hence, each CLASS module applies the modeling approach best suited for a particular subsystem and/or performance parameter in terms of model accuracy and computational speed.

Validation of the communications link analysis and simulation system (CLASS)

CLASS (Communication Link Analysis and Simulation System) is a software package developed for NASA to predict the communication and tracking performance of the Tracking and Data Relay Satellite System (TDRSS) services. The methods used to verify CLASS are described. The usefulness of a software tool such as CLASS depends strongly on the reliability and accuracy of the results it produces. For this reason, considerable attention was paid to validation throughout the CLASS development.

Flowfield scaling of a swept compression corner interaction A comparison of experiment and computation

Over the past decade, there has been some important progress in understanding the problems of three-dimensional (3D) shock wave/turbulent boundary layer interactions. However, the problems are by no means solved. The present investigation has the objective to determine the flowfield structure of a swept compression corner interaction and to perform a test of an equation considered by Settles and Bogdonoff (1982). The experimental data obtained in a 20 x 20 cm high Reynolds number supersonic wind tunnel are compared with the predictions of a state-of-the-art numerical solution of the Navier-Stokes equations. It is found that a 3D scaling law for Reynolds number effects, previously established for interaction 'footprints', is equally valid when applied to the present flowfield.

Ku-band system design study and TDRSS interface analysis

The capabilities of the Shuttle/TDRSS link simulation program (LinCsim) were expanded to account for radio frequency interference (RFI) effects on the Shuttle S-band links, the channel models were updated to reflect the RFI related hardware changes, the ESTL hardware modeling of the TDRS communication payload was reviewed and evaluated, in LinCsim the Shuttle/TDRSS signal acquisition was modeled, LinCsim was upgraded, and possible Shuttle on-orbit navigation techniques was evaluated.

CLASS - A comprehensive satellite link simulation package

CLASS (Communications Link Analysis and Simulation System) is a software package developed for NASA to predict the communications and tracking performance of the Tracking and Data Relay Satellite System (TDRSS) services. This paper describes the capabilities of CLASS and the communications link model used and discusses typical applications for CLASS.

Shuttle/TDRSS modelling and link simulation study

A Shuttle/TDRSS S-band and Ku-band link simulation package called LinCsim was developed for the evaluation of link performance for specific Shuttle signal designs. The link models were described in detail and the transmitter distortion parameters or user constraints were carefully defined. The overall link degradation (excluding hardware degradations) relative to an ideal BPSK channel were given for various sets of user constraint values. The performance sensitivity to each individual user constraint was then illustrated. The effect of excessive Spacelab clock jitter on the return link BER performance was also investigated as was the problem of subcarrier recovery for the K-band Shuttle return link signal.

Carrier phase recovery performance for PN-spread TDRSS link with radio-frequency interference

The carrier-phase recovery performance of a Costas loop for a nonlinear satellite channel with uplink and downlink noise is analyzed, and the extension of these results to the case where uplink radio-frequency interference (RFI) is present is considered. The signal format here is binary phase-shift-keyed (BPSK) or unbalanced quaternary phase-shift-keyed (UQPSK), the signals being either the non-return-to-zero (NRZ) or biphase (Manchester) type. With UQPSK, at least one data stream must be PN-spread. The channel comprises additive white Gaussian noise (WGN), a wideband filter, a bandpass nonlinearity and more additive WGN. The RFI being considered is pulsed continuous-wave, pulsed WGN, or a combination of the two. It is noted that the Tracking and Data Relay Satellite System (TDRSS) will be subjected to RFI from certain locations, especially in the S-band of frequencies. The characteristics of this link are generalized to form the assumptions underlying this analysis. The analytical results given include the S-curve of the equivalent loop and the phase-error variance of the linearized loop.

Shuttle Ku-band signal design study

Carrier synchronization and data demodulation of Unbalanced Quadriphase Shift Keyed (UQPSK) Shuttle communications' signals by optimum and suboptimum methods are discussed. The problem of analyzing carrier reconstruction techniques for unbalanced QPSK signal formats is addressed. An evaluation of the demodulation approach of the Ku-Band Shuttle return link for UQPSK when the I-Q channel power ratio is large is carried out. The effects that Shuttle rocket motor plumes have on the RF communications are determined also. The effect of data asymmetry on bit error probability is discussed.

Subcarrier phase recovery performance in bent-pipe mode of Shuttle data transmission

The subcarrier phase recovery is analyzed for the bent-pipe mode of Space Shuttle detached-payload data transmission on the Tracking and Data Relay Satellite System (TDRSS) Ku-band return link. The high-power component of the subcarrier modulation is unrestored payload data, either at baseband or modulating another subcarrier. At the receiver a Costas loop recovers the subcarrier phase. To analyze its performance in the baseband case, we obtain the loop S-curve, the power spectral density of the equivalent noise process, and the loop phase error variance.
