Photocatalytic degradation of orange II dye via high pore volume polymorph zirconium-doped titania under visible light irradiation

A series of mixed-phase Zr-doped TiO 2 was utilized for the photocatalytic degradation of orange II dye. These materials were synthesized through a sol–gel technique by varying the amounts of zirconium in the photocatalysts. These materials were characterized using X-ray diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), X-ray fluorescence (XRF), Raman spectroscopy, thermogravimetry analysis (TGA), and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) among others. XRF and XPS data showed that the elemental composition of the photocatalysts consists of zirconium, titanium, and oxygen. In addition, XRD and Raman spectroscopy confirmed the existence of anatase and rutile phases of TiO 2 . The TGA analyses showed that the undoped TiO 2 was the most stable, with no significant weight loss during the heating range. Furthermore, the materials can effectively degrade orange II dye solution up to 7 cycles through asymmetric cleavage of the azo bond.

Enhanced Catalytic Activity of a Vanadium-Doped Mesoporous Octahedral Molecular Sieve-2 (K-OMS-2) toward Hydrogen Evolution Reaction

Hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) is the cathodic reaction in electrochemical water splitting that produces H 2 in a renewable pathway, primarily to be used in fuel cells. K-OMS-2, a manganese octahedral molecular sieve, has the potential to replace Pt as a catalyst for HER due to its redox and electrochemical properties, which can be further improved by doping metal cations into the K-OMS-2 framework. In this work, we synthesized 1, 5, and 10% vanadium- (V) doped mesoporous K-OMS-2 under mild acidic reaction conditions. Here, the mesoporous nature of the samples was confirmed by BET analysis. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy confirmed that Mn has 2+, 3 +, and 4+ oxidation states, and V is present as V 4+ in V-K-OMS-2 samples. HER performance of 1% V-K-OMS-2 in an acidic medium shows the best activity with -0.32 V overpotential. The overpotential was lowered by 0.56 V upon doping 1% V into the K-OMS-2 framework. The 1% V-K-OMS-2 material has a Tafel slope of 129 mV/decay and an electrochemically active surface area (ECSA) of 127.5 cm 2 ECSA .

Effect of lithium incorporation on tweaking the electrocatalytic behavior of tantalum-based oxides

To study the effect of lithium incorporation on the electrochemical properties and catalytic behavior of tantalum-based oxides, a series of mesoporous lithium-contained tantalum oxides was developed adopting an inverse micelle-based sol gel synthesis method. Four various phases of amorphous Ta 2 O 5 , polycrystalline LiTaO 3 , Li 5.04 Ta 6.16 O 17.92 , and Li 3 TaO 4 were determined for samples synthesized at Li/Ta ratios of 0.5 (LTO-0.5), 1 (LTO-1), 2 (LTO-2), and 3 (LTO-3) respectively. The surface analysis revealed that LTO-2 sample is featured with lower amount of lithium atoms at the surface rather than the bulk of the sample. The electrochemical analysis of LTO samples showed that LTO-2 possesses lower charge transfer resistance extracted from impedance spectroscopy that consequently leads to a better electrocatalytic performance. The LTO-2 electrode also showed a low open circuit potential (OCP) combined with a relatively higher electroactive surface area, thus capable of running an electrooxidation reaction at a potential lower than all other LTO samples. The more negative OCP value of LTO-2 electrode in AA solution states a more facile electron transfer between the analyte and electrode compared to other synthesized samples. Mott–Schottky plots of LTO electrodes are characterized by positive slopes which indicate n-type semiconductor behavior. The charge carrier density (5.5 × 10 19 cm -3 ) in LTO-2 sample is the lowest among all other samples. The charge carrier density is dependent on the amount of applied lithium in the synthesis confirming various lithium diffusion behaviors in LTO samples. The lower carrier concentration in LTO-2 justifies its higher activity in electrooxidation providing less populated lower unoccupied molecular orbital (LUMO) for the accommodation of electrons extracted from the analyte higher occupied molecular orbital (HOMO). Therefore, LTO-2 showed an improved electrocatalytic performance due to lower charge transfer resistance (higher conductivity) offered by lower amount of lithium atom at its surface and higher oxygen vacancies in the bulk.

Multifunctional transition metal doped titanium dioxide reduced graphene oxide composites as highly efficient adsorbents and photocatalysts

A series of novel, mesoporous transition metal doped titanium dioxide-reduced graphene oxide composites are synthesized where the dopants were Mn, Co, Ni, Mo, and W. An in-situ synthesis method was used which involves a green, economic, hydrothermal process which can be scaled up easily. The composites show high surface areas (165–245 m 2 /g) and monomodal pore size distributions with average pore diameters in the range of 3–5 nm. The homogeneous distributions of the dopants are seen in SEM-EDX mapping data. The indirect band gaps of the composite materials are in the range of 2.20–2.48 eV. The composites show excellent dye adsorption activities where 100% adsorption of Rhodamine B occurs within 5 min when Mo–TiO 2 /rGO composite is used. Furthermore, the adsorbed dye can either be desorbed or photocatalytically degraded and the composite is reusable up to 10 cycles without losing significant activity. Mo–TiO 2 /rGO composite showed excellent adsorption of both cationic and anionic dyes at neutral pH.
