Lattice QCD Study of Pion Electroproduction and Weak Production from a Nucleon

Quantum fluctuations in QCD influence nucleon structure and interactions, with pion production serving as a key probe of chiral dynamics. In this Letter, we present a lattice QCD calculation of multipole amplitudes at threshold, related to both pion electroproduction and weak production from a nucleon, using two gauge ensembles near the physical pion mass. We develop a technique for spin projection and construct multiple operators for analyzing the generalized eigenvalue problem in both the nucleon-pion system in the center-of-mass frame and the nucleon system with nonzero momentum. The numerical lattice results are then compared with those extracted from experimental data and predicted by low-energy theorems incorporating one-loop corrections. Emergent geometry and duality in the carbon nucleus

Abstract The carbon atom provides the backbone for the complex organic chemistry composing the building blocks of life. The physics of the carbon nucleus in its predominant isotope, 12 C, is similarly full of multifaceted complexity. Here we provide a model-independent density map of the geometry of the nuclear states of 12 C using the ab initio framework of nuclear lattice effective field theory. We find that the well-known but enigmatic Hoyle state is composed of a “bent-arm” or obtuse triangular arrangement of alpha clusters. We identify all of the low-lying nuclear states of 12 C as having an intrinsic shape composed of three alpha clusters forming either an equilateral triangle or an obtuse triangle. The states with the equilateral triangle formation also have a dual description in terms of particle-hole excitations in the mean-field picture.

Lattice Monte Carlo simulations with two impurity worldlines

Abstract We develop the impurity lattice Monte Carlo formalism for the case of two distinguishable impurities in a bath of polarized fermions. The majority particles are treated as explicit degrees of freedom, while the impurities are described by worldlines. The latter serve as localized auxiliary fields, which affect the majority particles. We apply the method to non-relativistic three-dimensional systems of two impurities and a number of majority particles where both the impurity–impurity interaction and the impurity–majority interaction have zero range. We consider the case of an attractive impurity–majority interaction, and we study the formation and disintegration of bound states as a function of the impurity–impurity interaction strength. We also discuss the potential applications of this formalism to other quantum many-body systems.

Deciphering the mechanism of near-threshold $$J/\psi $$ photoproduction

Abstract The photoproduction of the $$J/\psi $$ J / ψ off the proton is believed to deepen our understanding of various physics issues. On the one hand, it is proposed to provide access to the origin of the proton mass, based on the QCD multipole expansion. On the other hand, it can be employed in a study of pentaquark states. The process is usually assumed to proceed through vector-meson dominance, that is the photon couples to a $$J/\psi $$ J / ψ which rescatters with the proton to give the $$J/\psi p$$ J / ψ p final state. In this paper, we provide a compelling hint for and propose measurements necessary to confirm a novel production mechanism via the $$\varLambda _c \bar{D}^{(*)}$$ Λ c D ¯ ( ∗ ) intermediate states. In particular, there must be cusp structures at the $$\varLambda _c \bar{D}^{(*)}$$ Λ c D ¯ ( ∗ ) thresholds in the energy dependence of the $$J/\psi $$ J / ψ photoproduction cross section. The same mechanism also implies the $$J/\psi $$ J / ψ -nucleon scattering lengths of order 1 mfm. Given this, one expects only a minor contribution of charm quarks to the nucleon mass.
