Electromagnetic precipitation and ducting of particles in turbulent boundary layers

A method for analyzing magnetic migration of particles in turbulent flows is applied to the prediction of particle trajectories and densities in turbulent aerodynamic boundary layers. Results for conditions typical of aircraft with 30-40 micron particles indicate a large upstream collection and a 5% loss of particles during one pass through the boundary layer. The capacity of the magnetic field to achieve a balance with turbulent diffusion in confining the particles to the boundary layer is discussed.

Dynamics of electromechanical flow structures.

Free-surface gravity flows and capillary wicking provide examples of flow structures with fluid partially ducted at free surfaces by external forces. Wall-less electromechanical flow structures are developed which have a similar nature, but with polarization forces providing the orientation at free surfaces. Like their mechanical counterparts, these have the ability to ingest liquid or expel vapor through their walls. The structures consist of electrodes running in the flow direction z with slowly varying cross sections in a plane transverse to the flow. A formulation is given of the long-wave nonlinear (principal mode) dynamics, with use made of energy functions to represent a broad class of possible mechanical and electrical structure geometries.

Space-charge dynamics of liquids.

The propagation and instability characteristics of small-signal electro-fluid-mechanical space-charge and polarization waves in nonhomogeneous fluids are developed. Stratified equilibrium configurations with fluid properties and space-charge density constant within planar, cylindrical, and spherical surfaces, are emphasized. Equilibrium electric fields due both to charges in the fluid and to externally imposed potentials are normal to these surfaces. The liquid is modeled as incompressible, inviscid, and perfectly insulating, with domains of sufficiently high frequency or growth rate to validate the last assumption defined in terms of electrical conductivity or mobility. A general set of relations for perturbation field and flow variables on the perturbed surfaces of fluid layers having constant properties and space charge are derived in each of the configurations.

Dielectric siphons.

The normally weak polarization force density, exerted on insulating dielectric liquids by a nonuniform electric field, is enhanced if high pressures are used. The nonuniform electric field acts as an elastic ?wall' to contain and guide the dielectric fluid. A general theory for these electrohydrodynamic (EHD) conduits has been developed. An illustrative example of the EHD conduits is the dielectric siphon consisting of two U-shaped electrodes held adjacent to each other by insulating nylon screws.

Synchronous charge-constrained electroquasistatic generator

Electroquasistatic generator depends on electroquasistatic interactions to provide synchronous operation. The generator employs a moving insulating belt, with an ac electric potential source to establish positively and negatively charged regions on the belt. The field effect of the charges on the belt creates an ac output voltage.
