Equivalent blackbody temperature of the top of a severe storm

An RB-57F high-altitude aircraft equipped with Wilde RC-8 cameras and an infrared spectrometer was used in the investigations. A storm was overflown over Graham, Texas, on April 29, 1970. In the experiment, the average radiometric temperature was determined to be very near the environmental temperature near the cloud tops. However, hot and cold regions in and near the updrafts and downdrafts were found to be significantly out of equilibrium. It is recommended that caution should be exercised in determining cloud top altitude from equivalent blackbody temperature.

On the determination of haze levels from Landsat data

The paper describes two methods for determining haze levels (specified by haze optical depth at a wavelength of 0.5 microns) from Landsat multispectral scanner data. The channel correlation method relates the haze level to the y-intercept of the regression line through a plot of the data in the plane of the multispectral channels MSS 4 and MSS 5. The minimum value method relates haze level to the minimum value of individual lines in the MSS 4 data set.

Program CALIB

The program CALIB, which was written to compute noise levels and average signal levels of aperture radiance for the helicopter version of the S-191 filter wheel spectrometer is described. The program functions, and input description are included along with a compiled program listing.
