Plasma and radio waves from Neptune: Source mechamisms and propagation

The purpose of this project was to conduct a comprehensive investigation of the radio wave emission observed by the planetary radio astronomy (PRA) instrument on board Voyager 2 as it flew by Neptune. The study has included data analysis, theoretical and numerical calculations, and ray tracing to determine the possible source mechanisms and locations of the radiation, including the narrowband bursty and smooth components of the Neptune radio emission.

A comprehensive analysis of electron conical distributions from multi-satellite databases

This report consists of a copy of a paper that has been submitted to the 'Journal of Geophysical Research', entitled 'DE 1 and Viking Observations Associated With Electron Conical Distributions,' and an abstract of another paper (included as an appendix to the report) that is about to be submitted to the same journal entitled 'Perpendicular Electron Heating by Absorption of Auroral Kilometric Radiation.' A bibliography of other papers that have been published as a result of this project follows. The purpose of this project was to use the DE 1 and Viking particle and wave data to better understand the source mechanism of electron conical distributions. We have shown that electron conics are often associated with upper hybrid waves in the nightside auroral region. We have also shown that electron conics are observed near auroral kilometric radiation (AKR) source regions and may be the result of perpendicular heating due to waves. We have completed a statistical study of electron conics observed by DE-l and Viking. The study shows the occurrence frequency and location of electron conical distributions; there are some differences between the results of DE and Viking perhaps due to different regions sampled.

Ray tracing of Jovian decametric radiation from Southern and Northern Hemisphere sources - Comparison with Voyager observations

The Voyager 1 and 2 Planetary Radio Astronomy observations of Io-dependent decametric (DAM) radiation originating from the Southern Hemisphere of Jupiter were compared with the results of three-dimensional model ray tracing calculations of the DAM radiation. The ray trajectories for sources located at constant sub-Io longitudes of 260 and 300 deg were computed for both the Northern and the Southern Jovian Hemisphere sources. The model results of wave propagation agree with the Voyager observations obtained with Io located at 260 and 300 deg in Jovian system III longitude. The agreement between the Voyager observations and the model ray tracings allows identification of the origin of several of the emission components.
