Planar hyperbolic polaritons in 2D van der Waals materials

Anisotropic planar polaritons - hybrid electromagnetic modes mediated by phonons, plasmons, or excitons - in biaxial two-dimensional (2D) van der Waals crystals have attracted significant attention due to their fundamental physics and potential nanophotonic applications. In this Perspective, we review the properties of planar hyperbolic polaritons and the variety of methods that can be used to experimentally tune them. We argue that such natural, planar hyperbolic media should be fairly common in biaxial and uniaxial 2D and 1D van der Waals crystals, and identify the untapped opportunities they could enable for functional (i.e. ferromagnetic, ferroelectric, and piezoelectric) polaritons. Lastly, we provide our perspectives on the technological applications of such planar hyperbolic polaritons.

Orienting an Organic Semiconductor into DNA 3D Arrays by Covalent Bonds

Abstract A quasi‐one‐dimensional organic semiconductor, hepta(p‐phenylene vinylene) (HPV), was incorporated into a DNA tensegrity triangle motif using a covalent strategy. 3D arrays were self‐assembled from an HPV‐DNA pseudo‐rhombohedron edge by rational design and characterized by X‐ray diffraction. Templated by the DNA motif, HPV molecules exist as single‐molecule fluorescence emitters at the concentration of 8 mM within the crystal lattice. The anisotropic fluorescence emission from HPV‐DNA crystals indicates HPV molecules are well aligned in the macroscopic 3D DNA lattices. Sophisticated nanodevices and functional materials constructed from DNA can be developed from this strategy by addressing functional components with molecular accuracy.

Using Fourier-Plane Imaging Microscopy for Determining Transition-Dipole-Moment Orientations in Organic Light-Emitting Devices

Here, we use Fourier-plane imaging microscopy (FIM) to determine the transition-dipole-moment orientation in doped organic emissive thin films. The use of FIM enables precise, sensitive, and rapid measurement of dipole orientation in the emission layer of an organic light-emitting device (OLED). An optical model of a stratified birefringent multilayer is introduced for interpreting results obtained by FIM. Using the model, we determine the average orientation of transition-dipole-moment vectors of three phosphorescent dopant emitters. The dipole alignment measured by FIM quantitatively explains the difference in OLED efficiencies using these archetype dopant molecules. FIM provides a nondestructive tool to measure and ultimately improve the outcoupling efficiency of OLEDs and other light-emitting devices.
