The Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) has recently established an accelerated development initiative to enable high-resolution active optical ranging and terrain mapping capabilities for a series of upcoming Solar System exploration missions.

Although nearly all the airborne and orbiting active laser sensors to date have operated at near nadir pointing angles, in either lidar or altimeter mode, we anticipate dual-mode instruments such as GLAS to emerge and impact the remote sensing community in the next decade.
The lidar was commissioned with a charter to provide range-resolved absolute backscatter profiles throughout the troposphere and lower stratosphere.

Tropospheric and lower stratospheric aerosol backscatter profiles were obtained with an airborne backscatter lidar during the NASA Globe Backscatter Experiment (GLOBE) missions in November 1989 and May/June 1990.
This paper presents an assessment of the evolutionary characteristics of the Mt. Pinatubo aerosol in the stratosphere as a result of the June 1991 eruption, which was monitored since its genesis with a ground-based backscatter lidar facility at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory.

This paper describes the study of cloud optical properties at lidar wavelengths in the visible and near-IR and the thermal IR for a wide range of cloud types.
