Amanzi–ATS: Modeling Environmental Systems across Scales [Brief]

Department of Energy national labs (Los Alamos, Oak Ridge, Lawrence Berkeley, and Pacific Northwest) designed Amanzi-ATS to model complex environmental systems across multiple scales. The open-source software includes the most complete suite of surface/subsurface processes, allowing users to select physical processes and their coupling interactions without rewriting software. Amanzi–ATS has been used to analyze pristine local watersheds, wildfire impact on watersheds, subsurface contaminant transport at legacy waste sites, the effect of a warming climate on the Arctic tundra, and groundwater in fractured porous media. Department of Energy national labs, U.S. Geological Survey, academia, and industry have applied the software.

Hydrogen Contamination Detector: Protecting the future of zero-emission fuel cell energy [Brief]

Los Alamos National Laboratory developed an electrochemical detector to protect zero-emission hydrogen fuel cells from contaminated fuels. Fuel cells power environmentally clean vehicles, fork lifts, drones, and provide auxiliary power. High-purity hydrogen is essential to avoid poisoning fuel cells. Current analysis methods are costly and cannot detect impurities in realtime. The Hydrogen Contamination Detector measures the two highest impact Department of Energy-identified impurities with a simple, low-cost unit that provides 24/7, point-of-service analysis. Los Alamos partnered with H2Frontiers to conduct field trials at hydrogen refueling stations and with Skyre LLC for commercialization through a DOE Technology Commercialization Fund project.

QUIC-Fire: 3D Fire-Atmosphere Feedback Model for Wildland Fire Management

Los Alamos National Laboratory, U.S. Forest Service, and Tall Timbers Research Station developed QUIC-Fire, the first laptop-capable, real-time wildland fire prediction software that captures the critical influences of 3D vegetation structure, interactions between multiple fires, variable winds, and complex topography at meter-scale resolutions. Prescribed burns are needed to prevent catastrophic wildfires in the U.S. QUIC-Fire transforms a prescribed fire manager’s ability to assess risk, optimize fuel treatments, and plan prescribed burns. Los Alamos, U.S. Forest Service, Tall Timbers Research Station, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, Spatial Information Group, and Applied Interagency Prescribed Training Center have used QUIC-Fire.

Smart Microbial Cell Technology: A high-throughput platform to optimize biocatalysts

Los Alamos National Laboratory developed an ultra-high-throughput screening platform to engineer custom biocatalysts that enhance the rate of chemical reactions critical in pharmaceuticals, renewable energy, and environmental cleanup. Current methods to find biocatalysts are slow. This platform scans genetic variations to optimize a single enzyme or microbial cell to generate a product efficiently. It selects rare mutations needed for biocatalyst optimization orders of magnitude faster than current screening methods. A custom sensor reporter gene circuit causes cells to fluoresce when they are making the target product. When coupled to flow cytometry, a million biocatalyst variants can be screened in hours.

SEDONA: SpEctroscopic Detection of Nerve Agents

Los Alamos National Laboratory developed the only portable screener to accurately detect the chemical nerve agents, providing results in seconds. Current airport detection system cannot scan for the threat of organophosphorus nerve agents and insecticides. Small quantities of these toxic chemicals can very quickly cause widespread exposure and severe symptoms. SEDONA screens through an unopened bottle using the principles of nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy. The system could be deployed and operated with minimal training. SEDONA dramatically reduces the likelihood of a successful nerve agent attack at airports, government buildings, embassies, sporting events, concerts, and political rallies.

OrganiCam: First Camera for Noncontact Biodetection in Space

Los Alamos National Laboratory designed a compact laser-induced fluorescence imaging camera with Raman spectrometer to identify organic molecules and biosignatures in environments such as Martian caves, icy-moons, and asteroid surfaces. OrganiCam is the primary instrument on the Laser-Induced Fluorescence Exploration of Caves for Organics and Volatiles using an Elevated Platform (LIFE COVE) NASA mission concept. OrganiCam could also determine if instruments being sent into space for NASA are sterile and analyze samples returned to Earth. OrganiCam’s robust design for extreme environments, portability, simple operation, and low power requirement build on LANL’s 50+ years designing robotic instruments for space applications.
