Novel High Temperature Capacitive Pressure Sensor Utilizing SiC Integrated Circuit Twin Ring Oscillators

This paper describes initial development and testing of a novel high temperature capacitive pressure sensor system. The pressure sensor system consists of two 4H-SiC 11-stage ring oscillators and a SiCN capacitive pressure sensor. One oscillator has the capacitive pressure sensor fixed at one node in its feedback loop and varies as a function of pressure and temperature while the other provides a pressure-independent reference frequency which can be used to temperature compensate the output of the first oscillator. A two-day repeatability test was performed up to 500C on the oscillators and the oscillator fundamental frequency changed by only 1. The SiCN capacitive pressure sensor was characterized at room temperature from 0 to 300 psi. The sensor had an initial capacitance of 3.76 pF at 0 psi and 1.75 pF at 300 psi corresponding to a 54 change in capacitance. The integrated pressure sensor system was characterized from 0 to 300 psi in steps of 50 psi over a temperature range of 25 to 500C. The pressure sensor system sensitivity was 0.113 kHzpsi at 25C and 0.026 kHzpsi at 500C.

Radial-velocity measures and the existence of astrophysical binaries in late-type dwarf stars

Radial velocities with errors of 1-2 km/s are presented based on CCD scans obtained with the Kitt Peak National Observatory coude feed telescope between 1982 and 1985 of 48 dK-M stars that lack Balmer emission. Comparison with Gliese's (1969) values shows only two stars to be spectroscopic binary candidates with small velocity amplitudes. No evidence for any short period (less than 10 days) binaries is found, supporting the conclusions of Young et al. (1986) that there are no astrophysical binaries among these chromosherically inactive dM stars.

Welding Tubes In Place

Special welding equipment joins metal tubes that carry pressurized cyrogenic fluids. Equipment small enough to be used in confined spaces in which such tubes often mounted. Welded joints lighter in weight and more leak-proof than joints made with mechanical fittings.

Measurement of sound absorption in the air

The large temperature gradient in each section of the resonance tube resulting from the liquid nitrogen coolant necessitated a design modification to the cooling system. A timer and four solenoid valves were installed so that the coolant flow can be reversed periodically. The hardware and software for controlling the analog to digital converter and conversion rate were completed, and the system is operational. A duty cycle control circit was implemented so that on the sixteenth conversion a relay shuts off the vibration exciter used to generate the sound wave. Thus the starting point of each decay curve is exactly known. This information is necessary for evaluating the g digital decay information. The data acquisition and digital decay evaluation programs are described.

Detection of infrasound generated by Clear Air Turbulence (CAT)

A unified data acquisiton system which is an AM carrier system consisting of a converter signal, conditioning electronics, and peripheral equipment was checked and calibrated and installed in a mobile van. A microphone array in the shape of a 244-m equilateral triangle was connected to the data acquisition system using 457-m long cables. Development of techniques for signal processing for interpreting the infrasonic signature (differentiating between CAT and other sources of infrasound) is summarized. Once patches of CAT are located in the atmosphere, corroboration can be achieved through test flights of aircraft into the suspected region.
