A comparative robustness evaluation of feedforward neurofilters

A comparative performance and robustness analysis is provided for feedforward neurofilters trained with back propagation to filter additive white noise. The signals used in this analysis are simulated pitch rate responses to typical pilot command inputs for a modern fighter aircraft model. Various configurations of nonlinear and linear neurofilters are trained to estimate exact signal values from input sequences of noisy sampled signal values. In this application, nonlinear neurofiltering is found to be more efficient than linear neurofiltering in removing the noise from responses of the nominal vehicle model, whereas linear neurofiltering is found to be more robust in the presence of changes in the vehicle dynamics. The possibility of enhancing neurofiltering through hybrid architectures based on linear and nonlinear neuroprocessing is therefore suggested as a way of taking advantage of the robustness of linear neurofiltering, while maintaining the nominal performance advantage of nonlinear neurofiltering.

Fault diagnosis for the Space Shuttle main engine

A conceptual design of a model-based fault detection and diagnosis system is developed for the Space Shuttle main engine. The design approach consists of process modeling, residual generation, and fault detection and diagnosis. The engine is modeled using a discrete time, quasilinear state-space representation. Model parameters are determined by identification. Residuals generated from the model are used by a neural network to detect and diagnose engine component faults. Fault diagnosis is accomplished by training the neural network to recognize the pattern of the respective fault signatures. Preliminary results for a failed valve, generated using a full, nonlinear simulation of the engine, are presented. These results indicate that the developed approach can be used for fault detection and diagnosis. The results also show that the developed model is an accurate and reliable predictor of the highly nonlinear and very complex engine.

Identification of propulsion systems

This paper presents a tutorial on the use of model identification techniques for the identification of propulsion system models. These models are important for control design, simulation, parameter estimation, and fault detection. Propulsion system identification is defined in the context of the classical description of identification as a four step process that is unique because of special considerations of data and error sources. Propulsion system models are described along with the dependence of system operation on the environment. Propulsion system simulation approaches are discussed as well as approaches to propulsion system identification with examples for both air breathing and rocket systems.

Towards practical control design using neural computation

The objective is to develop neural network based control design techniques which address the issue of performance/control effort tradeoff. Additionally, the control design needs to address the important issue if achieving adequate performance in the presence of actuator nonlinearities such as position and rate limits. These issues are discussed using the example of aircraft flight control. Given a set of pilot input commands, a feedforward net is trained to control the vehicle within the constraints imposed by the actuators. This is achieved by minimizing an objective function which is the sum of the tracking errors, control input rates and control input deflections. A tradeoff between tracking performance and control smoothness is obtained by varying, adaptively, the weights of the objective function. The neurocontroller performance is evaluated in the presence of actuator dynamics using a simulation of the vehicle. Appropriate selection of the different weights in the objective function resulted in the good tracking of the pilot commands and smooth neurocontrol. An extension of the neurocontroller design approach is proposed to enhance its practicality.

A simplified dynamic model of the Space Shuttle main engine

A simplified model is presented of the space shuttle main engine (SSME) dynamics valid within the range of operation of the engine. This model is obtained by linking the linearized point models obtained at 25 different operating points of SSME. The simplified model was developed for use with a model-based diagnostic scheme for failure detection and diagnostics studies, as well as control design purposes.

A failure diagnosis system based on a neural network classifier for the space shuttle main engine

A conceptual design of a model based failure detection and diagnosis system is developed for the space shuttle main engine. This design relies on the accurate and reliable identification of the parameters of the highly nonlinear and very complex engine. The design approach is presented in some detail and results for a failed valve are presented. These preliminary results verify that the developed parameter identification technique together with a neural network classifier can be used for this purpose.
