Optical Measurement Of Propfan Deflections

Optoelectronic system measures deflections of rotating propfan. In addition to 0.5-mW HeNe lasers, system includes Schottky-barrier photodetectors, neutral-density filters, signal amplifiers, output-signal-recording device, and digitizer. Laser beam passes through plane of rotation of propfan blades. Beam is one of three that measure displacements at different blade sections. Additional laser beam at bottom generates shaft-rotation timing signal.

Optical measurement of propeller blade deflections in a spin facility

A nonintrusive optical system for measuring propeller blade deflections has been used in the NASA Lewis dynamic spin facility. Deflection of points at the leading and trailing edges of a blade section can be obtained with a narrow light beam from a low power helium-neon laser. A system used to measure these deflections at three spanwise locations is described. Modifications required to operate the lasers in a near-vacuum environment are also discussed.

Post clamp

A pair of spaced collars are mounted at right angles on a clamp body by retaining rings which enable the collars to rotate with respect to the clamp body. Mounting posts extend through aligned holes in the collars and clamp body. Each collar can be clamped onto the inserted post while the clamp body remains free to rotate about the post and collar. The clamp body is selectively clamped onto each post.

Post Clamp With Attached Collar

New clamp for optical posts reduces time required to set up optical components. Joins pair of perpendicular posts supporting laser, lens, reflector, or other optical component and enables posts to be rotated in perpendicular planes so orientation and position of component adjusted. Advantage of clamp conferred by its E-type retaining rings, which hold post-clamp collars to post-clamp body. Collar tightens around post to prevent movement along post while allowing clamp to turn around post. Quarter-turn screws on body and collars tighten parts on post. Does not tend to mar post.

Vibration testing of impact-damaged composite laminates

A new test is described that can be used to measure changes in the vibration properties of impact damaged composite materials. Impact-induced delamination was observed to significantly affect natural frequencies of vibration and damping properties in cross-ply graphite/epoxy laminates. Natural frequencies are shown to drop by as much as half of their original value, and modal damping ratios can increase by a factor of up to eight when large amounts of damage are present. A simple finite element model of the damaged impact specimens was used to predict the effect of delamination on certain vibration properties. A comparison of the finite element calculations with the experimental measurements suggests that delamination was the dominant mechanism of flexural stiffness loss resulting from the transverse impact.
