Microwave Power Detection With Voltage-Gated Graphene

Commercially available, chemical vapor deposition grown, graphene has been used to realizevoltage-gate tunable, microwave power detectors. Corbino disc structures with chrome/gold contacts havebeen fabricated on top of graphene deposited on P-type silicon substrates with silicon dioxide gate oxides.Devices of varying sizes were used to detect a 433.92 MHz signal. These test structures exhibited a peak power detection sensitivity of 3.25 mV/mW at 292 K and 5.43 mV/mW at 80 K. The improved graphene detectors exceed the sensitivity of previously reported graphene detectors, 0.86 mV/mW, as well as previously explored carbon nanotube bolometers, 0.36 mV/mW

Dynamic Channel Assignments for Efficient Use of Aviation Spectrum Allocations

The demand for voice and data communications continues to rise with the emergence of new aerial vehicles into the airspace and the continued growth of aviation operations throughout the National Airspace System (NAS). Recent studies have shown that the anticipated growing demand for spectrum resources will exceed the capacity of existing aviation spectrum allocations. Further, airspace configurations, via assignment of fixed channel allocations within standard service volumes, do not allow for the dynamic and efficient distribution of spectrum resources based on airspace demand; as a result, a new approach to aviation spectrum management is needed to support the forecasted needs of new airspace users. The National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) is investigating applications of artificial intelligence (AI), machine learning (ML), and other advanced concepts to solve a dynamic constraint satisfaction problem which is analogous to the frequency assignment problem faced by aviation. Procedures and strategies for dynamic channel allocation can be borrowed from other large-scale mobile services (i.e., 4G/5G applications) and can provide a novel spectrum management approach that allows for the intelligent utilization of aviation spectrum throughout the airspace while maintaining the strict quality of service prescribed by aeronautical standards.

Deep Reinforcement Learning based Routing in an Air-to-Air Ad-hoc Network

This paper studies the Multiple Sources and Multiple Destinations (MSMD) routing problem in a dynamic Air-to-Air Ad-hoc Network (AAAN). We consider a spectrum limited scenario where multiple links have to share the same frequency channel so that co-channel interference becomes inevitable. As a result, routing decisions and spectrum access are coupled and must be jointly considered. This paper proposes a deep Q-learning based algorithm to find an optimal routing and channel selection strategy that minimizes the end-to-end communication delay. Specifically, under the assumption that only local information is available to every node, the Deep Q-Network (DQN) is trained offline to learn the optimal routing and channel selection strategy. After the trained DQN is implemented in every node, multiple relay nodes can simultaneously determine their next-hop relay and channel selections in real-time. Simulation results demonstrate the efficacy of our proposed algorithm.

Development of an Airspace Simulation and Modeling Tool for Enhanced Spectrum Management

The emergence of new aerial vehicles into the National Airspace System creates an increased demand for aeronautical communications to support aviation operations. However, the issue of spectrum scarcity remains an ever-present concern, and the growing demand cannot be supported using existing spectrum allocation strategies. As a result, a new spectrum management approach is required, and the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) is investigating advanced concepts to modernize the management and use of aviation spectrum by leveraging the latest advancements in wireless communications, big data and machine learning. This research proposes an autonomous spectrum allocation concept, which allocates communications resources, such as spectrum and power, based on the predicted communications and air traffic demands throughout the airspace, as opposed to the use of fixed allocations as is done today. This approach will result in improved spectrum utilization efficiency and enhanced airspace capacity. The autonomous spectrum allocation concept decomposes into three research areas: demand prediction, resource allocation, and use case evaluation. As part of the use case evaluation effort, a modeling and simulation capability is currently under development. This simulation capability includes the implementation of various features, including visualization of both live or virtually-generated airspace traffic, simulation scenario development, simulation management with data collection, and flight plan creation with corresponding trajectory generation. This modeling and simulation capability will continue to evolve as new and advanced airspace applications are introduced into existing and emerging operational environments.

Joint Communication Resource Allocation and Velocity Selection in Urban Air Mobility via Multi-agent Reinforcement Learning

With traffic congestion problems becoming more severe in urban areas, the National Aeronautics and Space Administration promotes the Urban Air Mobility (UAM) concept, which envisages a safe and efficient air transportation system. However, the increased communication demands in UAM can exacerbate the spectrum scarcity. Therefore, a new communication resource allocation solution is necessary. In this paper, we focus on uplink UAM communications, where multiple aerial vehicles (AV) perform cargo/passenger delivery tasks. With predefined flight paths, AVs make decisions on communication resource allocation and velocity selection to complete their missions under safety constraints. Accordingly, we formulate a joint optimization problem to minimize the weighted sum of the total travel time and communication outage time. We first model the optimization problem as a Markov game and propose a multi-agent reinforcement learning based solution. Simulation results corroborate the effectiveness of the proposed solution.

Lunar Surface Network Relay Terminal: A Lunar Communications Platform

This paper will discuss the development of a Lunar Surface Relay that will serve as a central terminal for lunar surface wireless communications (e.g., 3GPP, Wi-Fi) for surface assets to transmit and receive data back-and-forth with Earth through lunar orbital relays or direct with Earth. Four variations of a wireless surface terminal were designed with varying concepts of operation to assess mass, power, cost drivers, and trade-offs. The designs entailed one stationary platform and three mobile which provided interesting trade-offs. The terminals are powered for operation with either a radioisotope/battery power system or solar array/battery power system.
