Interfacial reconstruction effects in insulating double perovskite Nd2NiMnO6/SrTiO3 and Nd2NiMnO6/NdGaO3 thin films

Ferromagnetic insulating (FMI) double perovskite oxides (DPOs) A2BB′O6 with near-room-temperature Curie temperatures are promising candidates for ambient-temperature spintronics applications. To realize their potential, epitaxial stabilization of DPO films and understanding the effect of multiple broken symmetries across the film/substrate interface are crucial. This study investigates ultrathin films of the FMI Nd2NiMnO6 grown on SrTiO3 (STO) and NdGaO3 (NGO) substrates. By comparing growth on these substrates, we examine the influence of polarity and structural symmetry mismatches, which are absent in the NGO system. The interface exhibits immeasurable resistance in both cases. Using synchrotron x-ray diffraction, we show that films have three octahedral rotational domains because of the structural symmetry mismatch with the STO substrate. Furthermore, our coherent Bragg rod analysis of specular x-ray diffraction reveals a significant modification of the out-of-plane lattice parameter within a few unit cells at the film/substrate interface and the surface. This arises from polarity compensation and surface symmetry breaking, respectively. These structural alterations influence the Mn orbital symmetry, a dependence that we further confirm through x-ray linear dichroism measurements. Since the ferromagnetism in insulating DPOs is mediated by orbital-dependent superexchange interactions [Phys. Rev. Lett. 100, 186402 (2008)0031-900710.1103/PhysRevLett.100.186402], our study provides a framework for understanding the evolution of magnetism in ultrathin geometry.

Electronic and magnetic structures of a mixed triple perovskite: Ba 3 NiRuIrO 9

In search of spin-orbit coupling driven nonmagnetic J = 0 ground state and excitonic magnetism, various pentavalent iridates have been studied in recent years. However, a finite moment was observed in most of the cases due to solid state effects. Here, in this work, we investigate the electronic and magnetic structure of 6H hexagonal compound Ba 3 NiRuIrO 9 , where Ir 5+ is present along with magnetic Ni 2+ and Ru 5+ ions. Magnetic susceptibility measurements and neutron powder diffraction (NPD) experiments demonstrate the appearance of short-range magnetic ordering below 170 K and a long-range antiferromagnetic ordering below 80 K. The refinement of the NPD pattern further shows that the Ru and Ir moments interact antiferromagnetically within the dimer and interact ferromagnetically with the Ni sublattice. These experimental findings have been complemented by first-principles density functional theory calculations incorporating spin-orbit coupling effects and electronic correlations for the transitional metal d states. The computed magnetocrystalline anisotropy is also found to be significant and the crystallographic c axis comes out to be the easy axis of magnetization, consistent with the spin alignment direction found from NPD. This study shows that the mixed ruthenate iridate triple perovskite series is a promising family to study the interplay among spin-orbit coupling, electron correlation, and electron filling as a variety of Ba 3 M RuIrO 9 with M as a transition metal ion, rare-earth ion, and alkali metal ions can be synthesized.

Quantum fluctuations lead to glassy electron dynamics in the good metal regime of electron doped KTaO 3

One of the central challenges in condensed matter physics is to comprehend systems that have strong disorder and strong interactions. In the strongly localized regime, their subtle competition leads to glassy electron dynamics which ceases to exist well before the insulator-to-metal transition is approached as a function of doping. Here, we report on the discovery of glassy electron dynamics deep inside the good metal regime of an electron-doped quantum paraelectric system: KTaO 3 . We reveal that upon excitation of electrons from defect states to the conduction band, the excess injected carriers in the conduction band relax in a stretched exponential manner with a large relaxation time, and the system evinces simple aging phenomena—a telltale sign of glassy dynamics. Most significantly, we observe a critical slowing down of carrier dynamics below 35 K, concomitant with the onset of quantum paraelectricity in the undoped KTaO 3 . Our combined investigation using second harmonic generation technique, density functional theory and phenomenological modeling demonstrates quantum fluctuation-stabilized soft polar modes as the impetus for the glassy behavior. This study addresses one of the most fundamental questions regarding the potential promotion of glassiness by quantum fluctuations and opens a route for exploring glassy dynamics of electrons in a well-delocalized regime.

Thickness dependent OER electrocatalysis of epitaxial thin film of high entropy oxide

High entropy oxides (HEOs), which contain multiple elements in the same crystallographic site, are a promising platform for electrocatalysis in oxygen evolution reaction (OER). Investigating these materials in epitaxial thin film form expands the possibility of tuning OER activity by several means, which are not realizable in polycrystalline samples. To date, very few such studies have been reported. In this work, the OER activity of single-crystalline thin films of (La 0.2 Pr 0.2 Nd 0.2 Sm 0.2 Eu 0.2 )NiO 3 , grown on NdGaO 3 substrates have been investigated in 0.1 M KOH electrolyte as a function of film thickness. The OER activity increases with the thickness of the film. X-ray absorption spectroscopy measurements find an increase in Ni $d$-O $p$ covalency and a decrease in charge transfer energy with the increase in film thickness. These facilitate higher charge transfer between Ni and surface adsorbates, increasing OER activity. However, the OER process leads to excessive leaching of thicker films and the OER activity of a 75 unit cell thick film is found to be optimal in the present study. In conclusion, this work demonstrates that the thickness of perovskite oxides can be used as a parameter to enhance OER activity.

Orthorhombic distortion drives orbital ordering in the antiferromagnetic 3$d$ 1 Mott insulator PrTiO 3

The orbital, which represents the shape of the electron cloud, very often strongly influences the manifestation of various exotic phenomena, e.g., magnetism, metal-insulator transition, colossal magnetoresistance, unconventional superconductivity, etc. in solid-state systems. The observation of the antiferromagnetism in $RE$TiO 3 ($RE$ = rare-earth) series has been puzzling since the celebrated Kugel-Khomskii model of spin-orbital superexchange predicts ferromagnetism in an orbitally degenerate $d$ 1 system. Further, the existence of the orbitally ordered vs. orbital liquid phase in both antiferromagnetic and paramagnetic phase have been unsettled issues thus far. To address these longstanding questions, we investigate single crystalline film of PrTiO 3 . Our synchrotron x-ray diffraction measurements confirm the retention of bulklike orthorhombic ($D_{2h}$) symmetry in the thin film geometry. We observe similar x-ray linear dichroism signal in both paramagnetic and antiferromagnetic phase, which can be accounted by ferro-orbital ordering (FOO). While the presence of $D_{2h}$ crystal field does not guarantee lifting of orbital degeneracy always, we find it to be strong enough in these rare-earth titanates, leading to the FOO state. Thus, our work demonstrates the orthorhombic distortion is the driving force for the orbital ordering of antiferromagnetic $RE$TiO 3 .

Hole doping in a negative charge transfer insulator

RE NiO 3 is a negative charge transfer energy system and exhibits a temperature-driven metal-insulator transition (MIT), which is also accompanied by a bond disproportionation (BD) transition. In order to explore how hole doping affects the BD transition, we have investigated the electronic structure of single-crystalline thin films of Nd 1-x Ca x NiO 3 by synchrotron based experiments and ab-initio calculations. Here we show that for a small value of x, the doped holes are localized on one or more Ni sites around the dopant Ca 2+ ions, while the BD state for the rest of the lattice remains intact. The effective charge transfer energy (Δ) increases with Ca concentration and the formation of BD phase is not favored above a critical x, suppressing the insulating phase. Our present study firmly demonstrates that the appearance of BD mode is essential for the MIT of the RE NiO 3 series.

The prediction of high T c superconductivity in layers of LaNiO 3 through orbital engineering has led to extensive research efforts over the last fifteen years. During this period, a plethora of thin films and heterostructures based rare-earth nickelate family with perovskite structure has been synthesized and explored. Here, in this short perspective, we briefly review the complexity of bulk RENiO 3 , spotlighting several recent findings of emergent phenomena in heterostructures containing the interface between RENiO 3 and another transition metal oxide. Finally, we outline potentially interesting future directions linked to time-domain dynamics to harness new Mott and topological phases in artificial structures of RENiO 3 .

Proximate Quantum Spin Liquid on Designer Lattice

Complementary to bulk synthesis, here we propose a designer lattice with extremely high magnetic frustration and demonstrate the possible realization of a quantum spin liquid state from both experiments and theoretical calculations. In an ultrathin (111) CoCr 2 O 4 slice composed of three triangular and one kagome cation planes, the absence of a spin ordering or freezing transition is demonstrated down to 0.03 K, in the presence of strong antiferromagnetic correlations in the energy scale of 30 K between Co and Cr sublattices, leading to the frustration factor of similar to 1000. Persisting spin fluctuations are observed at low temperatures via low-energy muon spin relaxation. Our calculations further demonstrate the emergence of highly degenerate magnetic ground states at the 0 K limit, due to the competition among multiply altered exchange interactions. Furthermore, these results collectively indicate the realization of a proximate quantum spin liquid state on the synthetic lattice.

Giant orbital polarization of Ni 2+ in a square planar environment

Finding large orbital polarization in Ni-based oxides has become a topic of paramount interest in recent years due to the prospect of finding superconductivity. In this study, we investigate the electronic structure of single-crystalline samples of Sr 2 CuO 3 and Ni-doped Sr 2 CuO 3 containing Cu/NiO 4 square planar units. Our polarization-dependent x-ray absorption spectroscopy experiments reveal extremely large orbital polarization (~63%) for Ni 2+ . Cluster calculations and ab initio calculations find that the giant orbital polarization arises due to the low-spin (S=0) configuration with two holes in the Ni 3d x 2 -y 2 orbital, contrary to the expected high-spin (S=1) state from Hund's first rule.
