Arraying Techniques In The Deep Space Network

Report discusses performances of number of techniques for combining radio signals received at several antennas to increase signal-to-noise ratio of specified weak signal bearing digital data via phase modulation. Techniques studied: symbol-stream combining, baseband combining, carrier arraying, and full-spectrum combining. Basic idea to synthesize effect of larger antenna or, equivalently, array of antennas. Called "arraying", techniques used in Space Network to extend range of reception of signals from spacecraft traveling beyond distant planets.

Effects Of Phase Jitter On Lock Detection In QPSK

Report presents study of performances of digital carrier-signal-tracking loops used in reception of radio signals containing quadrature-phase-shift-keyed (QPSK) modulation representing binary non-return-to-zero data. Presents mathematical models of received signal and of noise. Describes lock-detector algorithm and presents equations characterizing lock-detection performance. Equations applied in analyses of three QPSK carrier-tracking loops: Costas crossover loop, maximum a posteriori estimation loop, and generalized Costas loop. Results of computer simulations agree with equations.

Analysis Of Lock Detection In Costas Loops

Report presents analysis of detection of phase lock in Costas loops, used in coherent binary-phase-shift-keying communication systems to track both subcarrier and suppressed carrier signals. Detection of phase lock important part of operation and monitoring of operation of Costas or other tracking loop, provides insight into behavior of loop in real time. Focuses on effects of phase jitter and correlation between samples of phase error in all-digital Costas loop, in which lock detection implemented via algorithm. Applicable to both sinusoidal and square-law carrier signals, incorporates new mathematical models of square-law and absolute-value detectors.

Pointing a ground antenna at a spinning spacecraft using conical scan - Simulation results

The results are presented for an investigation of ground antenna pointing errors which are caused by fluctuations of the receiver AGC signal due to thermal noise and a spinning spacecraft. Transient responses and steady-state errors and losses are estimated using models of the digital Conscan (conical scan) loop, the FFT, and antenna characteristics. Simulation results are given for the on-going Voyager mission and for the upcoming Galileo mission, which includes a spinning spacecraft. The simulation predicts a 1 sigma pointing error of 0.5 to 2.0 mdeg for Voyager, assuming an AGC loop SNR of 35 to 30 dB with a scan period varying from 128 to 32 sec, respectively. This prediction is in agreement with the DSS 14 antenna Conscan performance of 1.7 mdeg for 32 sec scans as reported in earlier studies. The simulation of Galileo predicts 1 mdeg error with a 128 sec scan and 4 mdeg with a 32 sec scan under similar AGC conditions.
